Waterloo is recognized as the birthplace of Memorial Day by Congressional action and Presidential Proclamation. Waterloo held the first complete communitywide observance of Memorial Day on May 5, 1866. An annual weekend long celebration/commemoration is held in May. Events include a Civil War encampment, concerts, stamp cancellations, history walk tours & a tour of homes, arts & crafts and horse & buggy rides. The National Women's Rights Historical Park extends into Waterloo to include the M'Clintock House. The Memorial Day Museum commemorates the first Memorial Day & the Civil War era. A Seneca -Cayuga Canal island has been developed for boat launching and public picnicking. Seneca Lake State Park is well-known for its lake trout fishing. The park has boat slips, launching, picnic areas, a playground & swimming. South of the village is the restored Peter Whitmer farm, where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was formed in 1830.
