I can’t imagine a better place to be than the Finger Lakes over the Fourth of July weekend. Every year my family drives to Watkins Glen to watch the fireworks as they shoot off over Seneca Lake from Clute Park. Knowing what a spectacular display it is, I was eagerly anticipating the night of wonder and exhilaration that I knew was coming until I found out that I had to work the night of the fireworks. I was immensely disappointed, but I accepted fate.

However, my mom surprised me at the end of my shift and drove me down to the lake. We just made it in time to see the beginning of the fireworks. The fireworks popped and danced in the air just above our heads as we sat only a few feet away from where they were sending them off into the sky. The explosions right above us caused my heart to race at the sound and display. Gorgeous! It was a night to remember.

Before I had arrived, my family had enjoyed other aspects of that night. This past Fourth of July weekend, Watkins Glen hosted the Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen. With these festivities going on, there were many activities to do and see before the fireworks even began. The members of my family enjoyed the warm, sugary taste of funnel cakes and other carnival food. IZOD IndyCar Series Fan Zone was also at the park.  The festivities included duel race simulators and several walkthrough trailers.  Also, a memorabilia and merchandise hauler was onsite where fans could buy gear to support their favorite IZOD IndyCar Series driver in the Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen.

Whether you’re a race fan or just in it for the fireworks, there is always something to do on Independence Day in Watkins Glen and, for that matter, throughout the year.
