Even though it is cold, there are still plenty of enchanting things to do and see in the Finger Lakes Region. Everyone is excited that spring is coming that we forget to take the time to admire the beautiful winter months. I have found myself guilty of this as well, after living in the Finger Lakes almost full time for the past four years I have wished for a speedy winter and a long warm spring.

With this being my last full winter in the Finger Lakes I decided to go out and experience more of what this region has to offer. Just yesterday, my boyfriend and I decided that we would go to the Keuka Lake Outlet Trail. The outlet trail has provided fun and excitement to residents around the Finger Lakes as well as visitors passing through. The trail follows the Keuka Outlet stream that connects Keuka Lake and Seneca Lake. Walking along the trail is not only beautiful but it tells a story of the early history of the area.

We have traveled this trail time and time again in the spring and summer months; but walking the trail this time was different. This was the first time that we had ever walked it in the winter. The experience was extraordinary; the trail was slick with snow and bits of ice that had evidence of snow mobiles, and cross country skiers. Looking through the woods and seeing all of the snow and the bare trees, with no sound of birds chirping, only the soft sound of running water it had a very tranquil feeling. It was so amazing to me that although I have been up and down this trail many times, it was almost as if I was seeing it for the first time.

The thing I loved the most about this trail is that it is so serene; it was really a chance to relax and just enjoy everything around. It was an opportunity to step away from the hustle and bustle of school work or the busy work day, and really enjoy myself. I would recommend treating yourself to a walk along the Keuka Lake Outlet Trail, or even one of the many other hiking trails in the area, they have so much to offer both in the warmer and colder months. Don’t let the winter in the Finger Lakes pass you by; you may be missing out on a unique experience.
