With winter in the rear view mirror, its time to put away those heavy winter boots, and break out your shorts and hiking boots. A perfect place to visit is Watkins Glen State Park. It is one of the most recognized State Parks in the Finger Lakes Region, and there are plenty of reasons why.

Visitors will be awed by the 19 enchanting waterfalls. My favorite part about hiking the gorge is not only do you get to admire these magnificent waterfalls, but you get to hike so close to them. Another thing I love is that it is so peaceful; it allows us to take time out of our busy schedules to admire the beauties of nature.

My friends and I like to take at least two trips each spring to the park. We have always gone on a self guided tour and you can stop along the way to read facts on the park and the history of the formation of the gorge. For those who are looking for more guidance, guided tours are offered as well.

There are a number of different trails visitors can travel:

  • Lovers Lane- A short walk but a great view at lookout point.
  • Gorge Trail- Follows the length of Glen Creek, and is best to experience the carved rock, and serene waterfalls.
  • Indian Trail- A trail above the stream which leads to the suspended bridge. Located 85 feet above Glen Creek where you can look out for miles and enjoy the spectacular view.
  • South Rim Trail- Follows the top part of the gorge where you have great views looking down on Glen Creek and Waterfalls.

Not only can you walk the trails here, but you can camp at one of the nearly 300 campsites available to visitors. And if it’s a hot afternoon stop by the pool that is located near the upper entrance, or hop on a bike to take a cruise along one of the trails.

There are many things to do at Watkins Glen State Park, from hiking and camping, to swimming and fishing, there is enough to keep busy. With warm weather here take time on a weekend to visit the park, and take advantage of the different activities, and amenities the park has to offer.
