When I ask you what does it mean to “live life, Finger Lakes style” what thoughts come to mind? In September what comes to my mind is the abundance of changing foliage colors, the smell of grapes being pressed in the air, and the popping up roadside farm stands to highlight the produce of local farmers and SO MUCH MORE.
Speaking of the smell of grapes..
Let’s Raise a Glass To Our Winemaker!
The Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance in conjunction with other program sponsors would like to congratulate the winners of our Winemaker for a Week promotion. The highlights of this promotion included complimentary accommodations hosted by Hope Lake Lodge, passes to wine and culinary themed festivals and one on one activities with regional Finger Lakes wine makers learning the process that goes into making the tasty product that ends up in your wine glass.
Contestants were asked to submit a video or a written piece telling the judges why they felt that they would be a great candidate to become a Winemaker for a Week. After voting closed this past Friday, September 2nd our first prize and second prize winners were selected! Don L. of Mecklenberg, NY was our grand prize winner and not far behind him was Lou W. of Fairport NY. Though it was a tough decision making the ultimate choice, we thank everyone who took the time to participate! Let’s raise a glass to cheer Don and Lou and hope that they enjoy their Winemaker for a Week experiences!

September is the Month to Harvest Riesling
Any Riesling fans out there? The Finger Lakes has built what some may call a Riesling empire. A little background for those that may not know, Riesling is a German variety that grows exceptionally well in the Finger Lakes as a result of the cool climate that parallels the grape’s original growing climate. The Finger Lakes has prided itself on making styles from bone dry to sweet so there is something for everyone. Be sure to stop in to one of the multitude of wineries along the lakes and those in between to try their varieties of Riesling and more, take a vineyard tour, and see what the ‘buzz’ is about Finger Lakes wine.
