Hit the Mountain this Summer
When you think of some of the mountains of the region, you will almost certainly consider the great skiing offered at places like Bristol Mountain and Greek Peak Mountain Resort but these attractions are open year round and offer some unique attractions during the warmer months in the Finger Lakes.
Bristol Mountain features three separate adventures during the summer. The Zipline Canopy Tour features 7 zip lines covering over 5,000 feet. On this adventure you will cross 4 bridges with views of Bristol Valley and finish with a “leap of faith. The Areal Adventure Park offers 7 challenge courses with over 125 obstacles to challenge the body and mind. Lastly, the Kids Adventure Park is perfect for children ages 4-7; giving them confidence as they work their way through one of 2 courses featured in this adventure.
Greek Peak Mountain Resort features an aerial adventure park and downhill mountain biking during the summer months. The aerial adventure park features four activities as well as the Nor’Easter Mountain Coaster that can reach speeds of 28 mph. The activities are perfect for groups, families, friends and individuals looking to challenge themselves in the great outdoors. The downhill mountain biking at Greek Peak offers 2 beginner trails, 2 intermediate trails, an expert only trail as well as a cross country trail and a mini-pump track. If you’re new to mountain biking, rent your equipment and sign up for a lesson!
Unique Festivals and Events Featured Large in the Finger Lakes
Throughout the year, many organizations in the Finger Lakes host festivals and unique events for visitors and locals alike covering everything from glassmaking to cider and more. There are some great events coming up this summer, such as the Finger Lakes Cheese Festival and the Kings of Summer party at Treleavan’s Wines. On Saturday July, 23 the Finger Lakes Cheese Festival features all of the cheeses the Finger Lakes has to offer at one place. Located at Sunset View Creamery in Odessa, the festival also features a farm market and plenty of local food and beverage vendors.
Treleavan Wines is hosting the Kinds of Summer for the second time on July 9. The event features local wines and beer as well as a number of food and food truck options to fill your appetite. Live music is also featured large with rock & roll, funk and swing musicians playing throughout the event.
Take in the Scenery at the Top-Notch State Parks in the Finger Lakes
The Finger Lakes contain some of the best state parks in the country. In fact, USA Today ranked Letchworth State Park and Watkins Glen State Park the best and third best state parks in the United States. There are also a number of other beautiful state parks throughout the region that will make for a great stop during your next trip to the region.
Letchworth State Park, known as the Grand Canyon of the East, is a majestic and beautiful spot in the Finger Lakes. This state park features 66 miles of hiking as well as cabins and camp sites if you would like to spend a night or two (or more!). Visitors can also bike, horseback ride, snowmobile and cross country ski within the park.
Watkins Glen State Park contains 19 waterfalls in a 2 mile hiking trail. The gorge path leads you over and under waterfalls as you make your way through the park. Camping is also an option at the Watkins Glen State Park; visitors with a tent or trailer can reserve their spot on one of the outer rim trails that overlook the gorge.
