Warm Your Winter with Arts Center of Yates County

Jan 17th, 2018

Kick the winter blues and join us for a bit of Penn Yan’s very own indoor sunshine at one or more of the Arts Center’s Creative Arts Workshops.

Bringing together the talents and skills of local artists, wine-makers and culinary experts, the Arts Center of Yates County has put together a selection of hands-on workshops to inspire and encourage the artist in you!

From drawing, painting and wine making to cooking, jewelry crafting and wood carving, our adult workshop programs are designed to offer the opportunity to explore, experience and expand your artistic creativity.

For wine enthusiasts, “Art of Wine” workshops are held other Tuesday evening from January 23 through May 1. Taught by local vintners, these classes are the perfect venue to learn the science, art and philosophies of winemaking. Enjoy the distinct flavors and enhance your understanding of the variety of wines of the Finger Lakes region.

Homemade pasta, fresh baked bread and pizza and handmade sausage – does it get any better than that? Yes, it does! With Chef Jeffory of Finger Lakes Foodies, you can also learn to create decadent truffles and luscious quick dough desserts or discover how romantic it can be to prepare a delicious three course meal with the one you love.

Or dabble in the traditional art of wood carving. Beginners can discover the charm of Scandinavian folk art by creating a figure from soft wood using simple tools and patterns or chip carve a plain wooden plate into a versatile and uniquely designed piece of art. With more advanced tools and a little experience you can craft a treasured keepsake.

For the young in age as well as the young at heart, the Center’s Art Camps for Kids and Out of School Art programs provide fun and surprises for students, ages 6-12. On March 30th, from 10am to 4pm, children can share a day of artistic creativity and make memories with neighborhood friends and other students as they fire up their imaginations. During the February and April school vacations, the “Out of School Art” program offers a daily array of creative projects for budding artists. Students can immerse themselves in a variety of expressive ventures from 10am to noon each weekday morning during the school breaks.

Drop by, pick up a workshop brochure and find how you can warm your winter through art. It’s never too early to sign up for one, two or more amazing classes! And while you’re at the Arts Center, enjoy the diverse talents of the local artists featured during the Interlude exhibit, running through February. March spotlights the handmade beauty of Hannah Graeper’s pottery and the vibrant paintings of Brandi Marino. The Yates County Student Art Show in April will feature the work of local middle and high school students from Penn Yan, Dundee and Marcus Whitman school districts. The only “blues” you’ll find at the Arts Center this winter are in the artwork!
