New Magazine Celebrates the Food Scene of the Finger Lakes
Ithaca (January 7, 2008) – Residents and visitors of the Finger Lakes now have a go-to resource for the latest news on the region’s abundant local culinary scene.
Filled with engaging articles and enticing photography, Edible Finger Lakes celebrates the cuisine of Central New York by telling the stories of local farmers, wine makers and brewers, professional chefs, home cooks and culinary entrepreneurs and the products they create. The magazine will also feature stories on culinary and farming traditions and local food festivities. A regular feature of each issue is an article from a well-known writer about a national topic that affects all of our food choices.
The magazine covers the 14 counties that make up the region (Canandaigua, Chemung, Cortland, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Onondaga Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne and Yates). Nearby businesses that support and provide for the local food economy will also be featured.
“When you look at the number of specialty farmers, vineyards, quality food establishments, and local food festivals, the Finger Lakes is easily identified as a culinary hot spot,” said Zoe Becker, Editor of Edible Finger Lakes. “There is a great appreciation and desire for all things local amongst the people of the region. They want to know where it came from, who made it and how it was grown. Edible Finger Lakes hopes to get people excited and active in the local food industry by telling the stories behind the products and throwing a spotlight on the culinary abundance of the region.”
The Finger Lakes is home to over 2 million acres of dedicated farmland, the largest domestic wine growing region outside of California and a restaurant per capita to rival New York City, making it one of the most exciting regions in the country for exploring culinary treats and supporting the Buy Local food movement.
“Because there is no other publication devoted solely to Central New York’s food scene,” said Michael Welch, the magazine publisher, “Edible Finger Lakes provides a great opportunity for local businesses to reach over 20,000 food and wine loving customers, four times a year.”
Edible Finger Lakes is a free publication, issued quarterly according to the seasons. The first issue will be published in mid-April of 2008. Copies will be available in grocery stores, restaurants, vineyards and wine shops, farmers markets, bakeries, cafes, boutiques, hotels and B&B’s throughout the Central New York region. It will also be available in cities with populations that frequent the Finger Lakes. Yearly subscriptions are available for $28.
Edible Finger Lakes is a member of Edible Communities (www.ediblecommunities.com), the national network of local food magazines that was recently recognized by the New York Times as one of the most successful and exciting publications available to food lovers across the country.
