Geneva YMCA presents The Drifters and The Marcels at Smith Opera House

GENEVA -- The Geneva Family YMCA celebrates its 2008 “Strong Kids”
community support campaign with "Juke Box Saturday Night," an evening of fun and nostalgia featuring the legendary Drifters and The Marcels at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Smith Opera House, 82 Seneca St. All proceeds go toward program development and subsidies for children whose families cannot afford Y memberships or registration fees.

The Drifters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and have been performing and recording their unique blend of rhythm and blues and soul music since 1953. Current lead singer Charlie Thomas has been with the quartet since 1958. Among their well- known hits are, “There Goes My Baby,” “Save the Last Dance for Me,”
“This Magic Moment,” Up On the Roof,” “On Broadway,” and “Under the Boardwalk.”

The Marcels were the group who put the “bomp” in the “bomp-a-bomp”
back in 1961 when their first recording, a doo wop version of the standard “Blue Moon,” sold over two and a half million copies worldwide. Today, the Marcels perform their own hits, as well as a “Salute to the Great Juke Box Giants,” including the Temptations, Jackie Wilson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, the Four Tops, the Coasters, and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

This is the first time in several years that the Geneva Family YMCA has undertaken a broad-based fundraising campaign. In recent years, the Y has sponsored special events such as golf tournaments and comedy nights, but the limited funds raised from these events have been used to meet core expenses.

“Our overall goal for the Strong Kids Campaign is $30,000 and we are going out to the community to ask for their support,” said Michelle Robbins, newly appointed executive director of the Geneva Family YMCA. “The show at The Smith will help us to meet our target and provide an opportunity to thank those who have contributed to the campaign.”

Reserved seating tickets for "Juke Box Saturday Night" are $30, $20 and $10. A limited number of tickets for a VIP reception with the performaers at 6:30 p.m., which also includes prime seating, are also available for $50 each. Tickets are available at the Smith Opera House box office weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., by calling 315-781-LIVE (5483) or toll free 866-355-LIVE (5483), or online at www.TheSmith.org. The Smith accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover.
