FALL FOLIAGE TRAIN EXCURSIONS TO RUN OVER FINGER LAKES SCENIC RAILWAY BETWEEN SHORTSVILLE AND VICTOR ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2008, AND SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2008

The Lehigh Valley Railroad Historical Society, in cooperation with the Finger Lakes Scenic Railway, will sponsor fall foliage train excursions over the former Lehigh Valley Railroad mainline between Shortsville and Victor on Saturday, October 11, 2008, and Sunday, October 12, 2008.  Five passenger train excursions will be operated over the weekend from Shortsville to Victor and return over the Finger Lakes Railway using two diesel locomotives and four passenger coaches.  The Lehigh Valley Railroad Historical Society museum in the old New York Central freight station at 8 E. High St. in Shortsville will be open to passengers during the excursions.

Each train ride will last two hours and will be a 24 mile round trip.  Departure times on Saturday, October 11, are 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.  Departure times on Sunday, October 12, are 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.  All trains will load and unload at the LVRRHS station museum.  The freight station is located one block south of Main St. in downtown Shortsville via Sheldon St. to E. High St.  Free parking is available at this location.

Fares are $15.00 per person for adults and children age 3 and over.  Children under age 3 on lap are free.  The ticket price includes the train ride and admission to the museum.  Ticket mail order forms can be obtained by calling 585-289-8022 or visiting the Lehigh Valley Railroad Historical Society web site on the Internet at www.lvrrhs.org.  Tickets may be purchased in person at the following merchants:  Bright Ideas at the Five Seasons Gifts, 1901 Rochester Rd., Canandaigua; Country Corner, 247 Main St., Phelps; Depot 25 Restaurant, 1 W. Main St., Shortsville; Ivy Thimble Quilt and Gift Shop, 5 Railroad St., Victor; and Manchester Village Hall, 8 Clifton St., Manchester.  If the rides are not sold out in advance, tickets will be available at the LVRRHS station museum at the time of the scheduled trip.

Snacks, beverages, and gift items will be sold at the station and onboard the trains.  No smoking or alcohol is allowed.  There are restrooms at the station and in the passenger coaches.  Passengers should dress appropriately for the weather because the coaches are not heated.

The Lehigh Valley Railroad Historical Society was organized in 1994 to preserve the memory of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and its employees in New York State.  The society currently has 150 members.  In October 2001, the LVRRHS purchased the ex-New York Central Railroad freight station in Shortsville for use as a museum and meeting place.  The proceeds from the train excursions will benefit the society’s museum plans.

Passenger train service along the Finger Lakes Railway began in 2001 with special excursions sponsored by local organizations such as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Historical Society.  Today, excursions include many of the same annual holiday trips, as well as added excursions for groups, private excursion opportunities, commuter runs to special events, and themed train rides like the Blues and Brews, wine and cheese, and fall foliage trains.  Over 11,000 passengers boarded Finger Lakes Scenic Railway trains for a total of 61 days of excursions in 2007.  Passenger trains generally operate from April through December on weekends and certain weekdays over different sections of the Finger Lakes Railway.  For more information on Finger Lakes Scenic Railway passenger services, visit www.fingerlakesscenicrailway.com or call Deb Najarro, Passenger Services Manager, at 315-374-4994.
