Phelps Arts Center welcomes spring with a new exhibit: Portraiture
Phelps, NY (April 2, 2008) – The Phelps Arts Center will open the 2008 season on April 6th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm with an exhibit featuring a collection of mixed media portraits by regional artists. Guests can enjoy collections on loan from regional patrons as well as original works by Finger Lakes artists. A special performance of Gospel music will take place at 2:45 pm by The Greene Family Singers. For those who would like a special memento of their experience at the exhibit opening, there will be a caricature artist on hand for the afternoon.
The Phelps Arts Center came to life in January of 2007, funded in large part by the Mary Hicks Preston Foundation. Housed at the historic former Episcopal Church building at 15 Church Street in Phelps, the Arts Center features exhibits, presentations, classes, and artwork for retail sale. The interim director and impetus for this new venture, Marion Donnelly, received the Citizen of Honor award last November for her vision and dedication to this project.
At the exhibit opening, visitors will find portraits dating back as far as 1790 as well as contemporary pieces. The subjects range from children to animals and the mediums vary as well, covering oils, pastels, charcoal, pencil and more. Three dimensional arts find a place in this eclectic mix with a bronze bust of William E. Simon, namesake of the business school at University of Rochester. This piece is presented by artist, Wayne Williams, who also shares additional portrait art for the exhibit.
The art, the music, and the company are sure to make for a splendid spring afternoon, so plan to join your fellow art lovers at the exhibit opening on April 6, 2008 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Phelps Arts Center. The normal operating hours for the Center are Friday through Sunday, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. For additional information, please visit www.phelpsny.com/arts or call (315) 548-2095.
