Seneca Lake Wine Trail takes the lead on leveraging Web 2.0 in marketing the Finger Lakes Region!
Watkins Glen, NY – Having only aggressively pursued marketing through MySpace and other social networking sites since February of 2008, the Seneca Lake Wine Trail has rapidly built one of the largest collection of “Friends” within the tourism industry of western New York State.
Executive director Paul Thomas explains “Currently, one of the key missions of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is reaching the evasive 21-31 year old market. Rather than depending on traditional media ads, which that demographic is uniquely capable of tuning out, or not even being exposed to in the first place, we have opted to engage this vital market using MySpace. And rather than simply racking up numbers of Friends, our goal is to try and create a viable community on MySpace with whom we interact and build long term relationships with.”
Some of the tangible benefits of the Trail’s efforts in this new marketing space are as follows:
- 1,000+ emails and comments received by Friends, demonstrating the genuine interactivity between the Trail and their Friends
- 2,200+ Friends, an overwhelming majority of whom live within a short drive of the Trail and at least claim to like wine
- 8,000+ page views of the Trail’s Myspace profile which, while paling in comparison to the organization’s website traffic, is still substantial given how targeted the traffic is.
- A “MySpace Party Photo Shoot” event provided the Trail with a terrific batch of free models, photos of which are being used in a variety of marketing collateral.
- Posting a proposed print ad campaign to the Trail’s MySpace page allowed the Trail’s thousands of friends to critique it. This impromptu focus group generated extensive, surprisingly valuable feedback.
While the Seneca Lake Wine Trail will undoubtedly continue leveraging traditional media for the majority of its marketing initiatives, this year’s experiment in MySpace and other Web 2.0, social networking sites has proven an unqualified success.
