Cayuga Nature Center Events

Below is a list of exciting events coming up throughout the month of September with previews of our Fall events with James Dake, our representative from Museum of the Earth. Please browse through and join us for any or all of our events.

The Historic Cayuga Nature Center
Saturday, September 13 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Come learn about the historic CNC Lodge and its beautiful surrounding lands. Take a
stroll on the history trail to see a hundred-year-old home site, explore our pioneer
village, and find some trees that tell some interesting stories!

Autumnal Equinox Celebration
Saturday, September 20  1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.  
Join us in celebrating the autumnal equinox (September 22) and learn the science behind
this special day. We’ll take a hike along the forest and into the prairie to witness the
coming of autumn!

Sneaky Salamanders
Saturday, September 27  1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Bring your detective hat and search the gorge and forests to track down these artful
amphibians. We’ll look under logs and rocks, through leaves, and in streams to catch a
glimpse of these amazing creatures.

Post-Reading Open House / TEAM Challenge
Sunday, September 28th from 10-4:00  (FREE admission to ALL!)
Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, will be giving a reading at Cornell Wednesday, September 24th at 7:30 p.m.  In honor of his theme of reincorporating nature
into the lives of children, we will open our doors the Sunday following his reading to allow children and adults alike to enjoy our beautiful natural setting.  We will also have our TEAM Challenge ropes course set up for the public to experience for just $10, which is a rare and exciting opportunity, given that people can usually only participate if they come as part of a group.  Come play in the trees with us!  

Tompkins Trust Company Open House
Saturday, October 11th from 10-4:00
On this day anyone with a Tompkins County Trust Company account can visit the nature center free of charge by showing their check book or TCTC credit / check card.  There will be an animal feeding at noon as well as tours of our property, and as always, visitors can hike our miles of trails, climb to the top of TreeTops, our six-story tree house, and enjoy our animals and educational displays throughout the center.

Project Orange Cancer Awareness Event
Sunday, October 26th from 10-4:00
Speaking Up for Kids with Cancer

We will be hosting an event to help raise awareness and funds for Kids with Cancer in collaboration with a larger Cancer Awareness event held in Ithaca on Saturday.  More information on this event will be forthcoming.

Petrified of the Woods?
Saturday, October 4 from 1-2:30 p.m.
Rid yourself of a fear of the forest by studying and exploring all of the interesting things in the trees surrounding CNC. We will explore forests past and present, take a look at some beautiful petrified wood, and learn to identify trees by leaf and bark.

 

The Colors of Cayuga
Saturday, October 11 from 1-2:30 p.m.
The colors of nature are brilliant, especially in Autumn. Join us in investigating the
splendors of Fall. We will make fresh apple cider and take an Autumn hike.

CNC is Gorges
Saturday, October 18 from 1-2:30 p.m.

Come dig up the past and explore the gorges at CNC while learning the geology of the
area. Dig through shale that was deposited 380 million years ago when New York was
covered with a shallow sea. Everyone will take a fossil home!

Naturalists Needed!
Saturday, October 25 from 1-2:30 p.m.
What does a naturalist do? How can I become a naturalist? Come be naturalists for the
day, feed live animals, hike the trails, and study everything you may find in nature:
trees, tracks, insects, bones, plants, rocks, furs, and even scat!!

Spooky Owl Prowl
Saturday, November 1 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Join us on the night after Halloween to take a spooky stroll through the trials in search
for the nocturnal owls of our woods.

Birding Bingo
Saturday, November 8 from 1-2:30 p.m.
Bingo! Come join us for a hike with a twist. We will explore our woods and trails while
spotting our feathered friends of the forest. We will even climb up Tree Tops, our
six-story tree house, to get a better view of life in the trees. Bring your binoculars if
you have them!

The Living Finger Lakes
Saturday, November 15 from 1-2:30 p.m.
The Finger Lakes are alive!! Where did they come from? What is living in them now? We will take an exciting look at New York and the life of the Finger Lakes Region; through its
ancient sea past, gargantuan glaciers, and on to the Finger Lakes we know and love today.

Turkey Talk
Saturday, November 22 from 1-2:30 p.m.
Celebrate and learn all about wonderful wild turkeys. Learn about their habitat, dress a
turkey, call a turkey, and go for a “Turkey Walk.”
