Buechner was the first director of the Corning Museum of Glass (1950-1960) and then the director of the Brooklyn Museum (1960-1971). In 1972 he became president of Steuben Glass, chairman of the Corning Glass Works Foundation and president of the Corning Museum of Glass. He helped establish the Rockwell Museum in 1976, serving as its president for ten years. In 1985 he became a vice president of Corning Glass Works. He has taught in Germany, Corning, and Elmira and conducts workshops for various schools, including the Scottsdale Artists’ School. In a recent artist statement Buechner remarks, "Doing the same thing for decades and decades is never boring if it's difficult enough. Making pictures is such a thing for me because I can see better than I can paint; I feel more than I can express; every idea gives birth to another; and what so many others have accomplished is infinitely inspiring." When asked “What is Art?” Buechner replied “Art is nothing more than good work.” Bridget Bossart van Otterloo will be showcased in the 2nd floor gallery. Bridget paints and teaches art in Corning, New York. She has a degree in Studio Art from Houghton College. Bridget moved to Corning in 2002 to work as an apprentice and studio assistant for artist Thomas S. Buechner. She currently works from her light-filled home studio, where her subjects include still life, flowers, plants and landscapes painted in either oils or watercolors.
