Mumford, NY- The federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awarded $140,249 in grant money to Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford, NY. The museum will use the funding over the next three years to develop a comprehensive master interpretive plan that integrates its 19th-century historic structures, artifacts, fine art and gardens into a single intellectually consistent resource. The museum will assemble a team of nationally recognized scholars, local educators and community representatives to collaborate in this effort. The plan will be implemented at the museum, as well as through outreach programs and the museum's website.
"The museum is so pleased to receive this award and looks forward to developing exciting new experiences for our museum visitors and schoolchildren," said Betsy Harrison, President and CEO of the museum. U.S. Representative Thomas M. Reynolds, R- Clarence, announced the award on September 21. Reynolds acknowledged the important role the museum plays in preserving local history and heritage.
"The museum will use the funding to guide the development of new exhibitions, programs, events, and collecting plans," Reynolds said. "Once completed, these improvements will allow the Genesee Country Village & Museum to offer area residents an even more thorough, more valuable historical resource."
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is an independent federal grant-making agency dedicated to creating and sustaining a nation of learners by helping libraries and museums serve their communities. "With their rich collections, museums enable visitors to physically connect with history, science and the creative process," said Dr. Robert S. Martin, Director of IMLS. "The Museums for America grants will help museums advance their role as trusted resources that serve communities by creating and sustaining a nation of learners."
