Equal Rights by all means: Geneva's Role in Suffrage Drama

March 28th, 2017

Hobart and William Smith Professor Christine Woodworth kicks off our Spring Lecture Series with “‘Equal Rights by all means: Geneva's Role in Suffrage Drama."

On the afternoon of March 31, 1910, hundreds of people filled the Maxine Elliott Theatre in New York City for an afternoon of variety entertainment organized by actress Beatrice Forbes-Robertson in support of suffrage. The U.K. and U.S. suffrage movements converged onstage as British and American actresses performed three short suffrage plays interspersed by rousing speeches and satirical poems delivered by figures such as Maxine Elliott herself and Harriot Stanton Blatch, daughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The matinee generated over $1000 in donations and led the New York Times reviewer to assert, “If Equal Rights will result in many more entertainments as pleasant as the one arranged…at the Maxine Elliott Theatre yesterday, then Equal Rights by all means!” Much of the archival evidence of the 1910 suffrage matinee survives in scrapbooks compiled by Genevans Elizabeth Smith Miller and her daughter Anne Fitzhugh Miller.

Woodworth will explore the Geneva connections to the suffrage matinee and reveal how the performance laid the foundation for future U.S. performances of British pro-suffrage propaganda plays. The lecture will conclude with a staged reading of one of the pieces included in the matinee.

Performers will include HWS students and members of the Geneva community. Chris Woodworth is an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, where she primarily teaches courses in theatre history and directs. Chris is currently an HWS Fisher Center Fellow, exploring the 2016-2017 theme: “No Place Like Home.”

Chris is originally from Geneva and has directed local productions for HWS Theatre, Geneva Theatre Guild, and Headless Sullivan Theater, as well as the Geneva Historical Society's 2014 program From Beyond: Washington St. Cemetery Stories.

This program is supported in part by the Samuel B. Williams fund for programs in the Humanities. For more information about this program call the Geneva Historical Society at 315-789-5151.

Women on Wheels: How Gilded Age Women Found Freedom through Bicycling

April 7th, 2017

The second presentation of our Spring Lecture Series exploring women's rights history is a Public Scholars program sponsored by Humanities New York. Ellen Gruber Garvey will bring us the program, "Women on Wheels: How Gilded Age Women Found Freedom through Bicycling, Fought Against People Who Tried to Stop Them, and Why It Matters Today" to the Geneva History Museum on Friday, April 7 at 7 p.m.

When women and girls first rode bicycles in large numbers in the 1890s, they celebrated their new freedom to move around in the world. Susan B. Anthony thought bicycling had “done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.” Is it surprising that conservatives panicked at visions of women riding alone, with other women, or with unsuitable men, and campaigned to stop them? Bicycling women did not want to give up their new mobility, and there were plenty of arguments back and forth. Some claimed that women would damage themselves by acquiring a “bicycle face,” or would get sexual pleasure from bicycling — and thus ruin their reproductive capacities.

Although this seems like something that happened long ago, women, especially, are often still discouraged from physical activity and mobility in the US and in other countries. During this talk, Ellen Gruber Garvey will invite the audience to discuss ways they were encouraged to participate in physical activity or discouraged from it, and how they responded. We will consider how the automobile, which followed the bicycle as an agent of individual mobility, has reduced Americans’ physical activity.

Ellen Garvey is Professor of English at New Jersey City University, where she co-edits the journal Transformations: The Journal of Inclusive Scholarship and Pedagogy. Her doctorate is from the University of Pennsylvania, her MA from the University of Massachusetts, and her BA from Empire State College, SUNY. Her recent book, Writing with Scissors: American Scrapbooks from the Civil War to the Harlem Renaissance, has won four awards, including the Society of American Archivists' Waldo Gifford Leland Award and the Institute for Humanities Research Award.

This program, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities’ Public Scholars program.

Buster Keaton THE GENERAL – a 1926 American Silent Comedy Film directed by Buster Keaton and Clyde Bruckman is coming to the Clemens Center on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. and will feature accompaniment by David Peckham on the Marr and Colton Theatre Organ.

“Consistently ranked among the greatest films ever made, Buster Keaton’s THE GENERAL is so brilliantly conceived and executed that it continues to inspire awe and laughter with every viewing.” Rejected by the Confederate army as unfit and taken for a coward by his beloved Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), young Johnny Gray (Keaton) is given a chance to redeem himself when Yankee spies steal his cherished locomotive. Johnny sets out to single-handedly win the war with the help of his locomotive. What follows is without exaggeration, probably the most cleverly choreographed comedy recorded on celluloid. Joined by theatre organ accompaniment with Resident Theatre Organist, David Peckham, this is an afternoon of fun not to be missed!

April 21st, 2017

Set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions, The Dining Room is comprised of a mosaic of interrelated scenes–some funny, some touching, some rueful–where actors change roles, personalities and ages as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids.

Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.

THURSDAY, APRIL 27 AT 7:00 PM

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS: LYONS NATIONAL BANK, DELAVAN FOUNDATION, SPRINGHILL FOUNDATION

All grown-ups were children once, although few of us remember the wonderment of childhood. This astonishing and beautiful tale will remind you! A biplane crashes in the Sahara Desert. The pilot recognizes the severity of his situation and springs to action. He is frantically trying to repair his wrecked plane when a small boy interrupts and asks him to draw a sheep. Who is this mysterious child, where did he come from, and what is he doing so far from civilization?

The Little Prince is an enchanting theatrical production for all ages. In this unique take on the classic tale, audience members young and old are invited to experience the wonderment of childhood as The Little Prince transports them to exotic worlds and introduces them to whimsical characters. Meet a bombastic king, a talking rose and a cheerful fox who is eager to be domesticated. Through the eyes of the Little Prince, the pilot gains unique insights into love, loss, and laughter.

This magical Swazzle production features a script adapted for the stage by Rick Cummings and John Scoullar, based on the book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The show utilizes handcrafted puppets, live actors, original music and innovative projection techniques to bring the heart-warming story of The Little Prince to life.
