The Canal is Open!
This year marks the 189th season of New York’s Canal system, which encompasses the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-SenecaCanals. After nearly two centuries of continuous operation, New York’s canals are still an economic engine and are ”open for business”, largely due to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s focus on bringing new economic development and activity to New York State. This year, the Canal Corporation is expecting commercial shipping to exceed 100,000 tons, a level not seen in two decades.
The canals are a focus of recreation and tourism and generate nearly $380 million annually for the upstate New York economy. The upcoming canal season will feature many exciting attractions and events including Cycle the Erie Canal, an end-to-end trip along the Canalway Trail as well as the return of the replica Canal Schooner Lois McClure, which will travel the entire length of the Champlain, Erie, and Oswego Canals. Perennially popular events like CanalSplash!, Canalfest of the Tonawandas, Fairport Canal Days,Oswego Harborfest, and the Waterford Tugboat Roundup will be back for another season of fun and history.
###
The New York State Canal System is comprised of four historic waterways, the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca Canals. Spanning 524 miles across New York State, the waterway links the Hudson River, Lake Champlain, Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes and the Niagara River with communities rich in history and culture. For more information regarding events, recreation and vacation opportunities along the Canal system, please visit www.canals.ny.gov or call 1-800-4CANAL4.
The Erie Canalway Trail is a multi-use trail, designed to accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists, and other uses. More than three-quarters of the 365-mile Erie Canalway Trail from Buffalo to Albany is now completed.

Event: Winemaker Wednesdays, May
Location: The 15+ participating, member wineries of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail
Date/Time: May 8, 2013, various times
Description: Winemaker Wednesdays is really for one kind of person: the type of person that not only loves to drink wine, but adores learning about it, talking to people about it, experiencing it. Certainly everybody is invited to this limited series of unique, custom winery experiences, though it has been conceived for passionate, curious fans of wine, winemaking and all that goes into that. Each winery has crafted some kind of unique, or special event or activity for these days. And the programs may change from one Wednesday to the next. It is necessary for you to call the winery and make an appointment for these, and at that time you can confirm their offering. The reason an appointment is required, is because many wineries commit one or two members of their senior leadership (owner and/or winemaker or vineyard manager, oftentimes) to conduct the program, and typically those individuals have a slew of other tasks and chores they should be doing, and appointments enable them to manage their time best. Some of these offerings have fees associated with them, most do not. Most have limited time constraints, some do not. Every Winemaker Wednesday takes place on the second Wednesday of the given month. For a more detailed list of the varying opportunities offered by the participating wineries please visit our website.

"The Rochester Lilac Festival continues to grow in attendance and popularity every year by welcoming the festival season back to Monroe County with a big purple splash of spring," said Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks. "Lilac Fest attracts thousands of out-of-town guests to our community and contributes more than $3 million to our local economy. That is an incredible testament to all that Monroe County has to offer and something our entire community should be very proud of."
With local musicians on the main stage every day, coupled with the beauty of Highland Park, the festival is truly a showcase of the city's and county's talents and creativity and natural beauty. The 155-acre Highland Park is a crown jewel among Monroe County's 21 parks. It was designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who also created New York City's Central Park. CORNING, NY—The Corning Museum of Glass announced today that it will offer free programs on the opening day of this year’s major exhibition, Life on a String: 35 Centuries of the Glass Bead as part of the Association of Art Museum Directors’ (AAMD) Art Museum Day, coinciding with International Museum Day on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Visitors are invited to take free guided tours of Life on a String with exhibition curator Adrienne Gennett and watch free flameworking demonstrations to see how glass beads are made.In 2012, AAMD launched an initiative encouraging visitors of all ages to share their experiences of Art Museum Day through social media. Last year’s event prompted an outpouring of responses with tweets, “check-ins” via FourSquare, and personal responses from across North America. The Corning Museum of Glass (@corningmuseum on Twitter) invites visitors to continue the conversation this year by sharing their perspectives via social media with the hashtag #artmuseumday.
“Art museums bring communities together and engage people of every background in the shared exploration of human expression across time and cultures,” said Chris Anagnos, Executive Director of AAMD. “AAMD is so pleased that The Corning Museum of Glass is joining us in celebrating Art Museum Day and is encouraging everyone in the glass art community to participate and share their experiences in a public forum.”
Art Museum Day emphasizes the essential role that art museums play in their communities, highlights the value of the visual arts in society, and provides new opportunities for audiences to participate in the wide-ranging programs offered by AAMD member museums. These member institutions—located across the United States, Canada, and Mexico—include regional museums as well as large international museums. International Museum Day is organized annually around the world by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). AAMD’s Art Museum Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the role of art museums in North America, as part of ICOM’s global celebration.

The 14th annual Celebrate Commemorate event will be held May 24-27 in Waterloo, the Birthplace of Memorial Day. For more information about the events, go to www.waterloony.com.
The 147th consecutive commemoration of Memorial Day will be on Thursday, May 30. It will include prayer services, and the official Memorial Day parade at 6 pm, followed by ceremonies in Lafayette Park. Major General Karen Dyson, first female director of the Army Budget, will be the featured speaker.
10:30 am Toddlers and preschoolers are invited to hear the story From Head to Toe by Eric Carle and then put together a wobbly skeleton.
7:30 - 9:00 pm Dr. Mark Avery, former Conservation Director for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and wildlife blogger for The Independent newspaper, spent 25 years working for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in the UK, an organization with more than 1.1 million paying members. As Conservation Director for more than a decade, he led conservation actions: lobbying the UK government; carrying out species reintroductions; providing outreach to farmers; buying land for nature reserves. Dr. Avery will discuss how much of this success came down to science and how much to luck or politics.
6:30 - 7:30 pm Tour the woodland pathways and varied plant habitats of the Mundy Wildflower Garden with Krissy Boys, gardener and native plants specialist. Spring is the season for experiencing delicate and ephemeral natives such as trillium, Jack-in-the-pulpit, bloodroot, and Solomon's seal. These plants and many others native to the northeastern U.S., including several that are scarce and vulnerable to exploitation, are carefully managed in this natural area. Free parking is available at the Wildflower Garden entrance. Free.
5:30 pm Please join us for a discussion of Nelson George's Hip Hop America. The discussion will be facilitated by Eric Kofi Acree, Director at Cornell's John Henrik Clarke Africana Library.
