PALMYRA, where State Routes 31 & 21 converge, is a family and business-friendly Erie Canal community. Its historic canal, manufacturing, retail, and religious heritage is celebrated year-round through numerous events.
The annual Canaltown Days celebration in September, emphasizes the town's 1800s historic connection to canal life. Family-friendly, Palmyra is a favorite stopover for hikers and bikers along the Erie Canalway Trail. Meet a Lockmaster who controls boats cruising the canal as they glide through Lock 29. Enjoy a picnic or launch your boat at Aqueduct Park, and view an original Erie Canal aqueduct and the newly restored Aldrich Change Bridge. Celebrate Canal Splash Weekend in August with Palmyra's Pirates of the Erie Canal activities. Canal boaters docking at the Port of Palmyra are just a short walk away from the business district and its fine Victorian architecture with antique cast-iron ornate storefronts, many fine museums, other historic sites, a variety of restaurants and great local shoppes. The Alling Coverlet Museum, one of four unique museums operated by Historic Palmyra, Inc., houses a collection of over 200 coverlets and quilts. Palmyra is home of The Wayne County Fair. It features homemade pies, pickles, jellies, clothing, quilts, produce and flowers for judging, as well as prize-winning farm animals, a variety of equestrian events, food, demolition derbies, musical entertainment and Midway games. Take a free tour of historically-accurate early Latter-day Saint Church sites-such as a log cabin, cooper shop, a bookstore complete with antique printing press, and the Joseph Smith frame home-to feel as if you've been transported back to the 1820s. Tours are available year-round and will interest family members of all ages. View the nation's largest outdoor pageant at Hill Cumorah just south of Palmyra in July. Free parking.
