Join us for a wintertime night hike guided by GCV&M naturalists and experience the outdoors as owls do. Warm your toes by one of our outdoor fire pits, families can listen in on a reading of “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolen, enjoy food and beverages in the Museum’s Meeting Center, shop specialty owl items in the Flint Hill store, and more! Visitors will have the exciting opportunity to meet these mysterious nocturnal creatures up close with a visit from our friends at Wild Wings.

Winter is wonderful at GCV&M! 

Beginning on Sunday, January 8, and running throughout January and February of 2023, the GCV&M’s Meeting Center and Nature Trails will be open to visitors from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for Winter Nature Sundays! 2023 Winter Nature Sundays will take place on January 8, 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12, 19, and 26. Plus, we’ll be offering Spring Nature Sundays on select dates throughout March and April – stay tuned for more information! 

Visitors can enjoy sledding on the Great Meadow, walks in the Historic Village (please note, paths may be slippery and buildings will not be open), snowshoeing in the wintery woods, cross-country skiing (please bring your own skis), warm beverages and snacks in the toasty Meeting Center, and more! Tickets for Nature Sundays can be purchased online in advance or at the door (check-in at the Meeting Center).

On July 2, 1879, workmen digging a road near the Taughannock House, a tourist hotel at the Taughannock Falls overlook, uncovered an apparent petrified man thought to be thousands of years old. Genesee Country Village & Museum is partnering again this winter with Wild Wings Inc. to host the popular Owl Moon night-hike and owl meet and greet experience on Fridays and Saturdays, February 3, 4, 10, and 11. Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to take a guided night hike with a GCV&M naturalist, meet owls with Wild Wings, hear a reading of the book “Owl Moon,” and more. Plus, the Museum’s Meeting Center will be open with food and drink available for purchase. Admission to this event is $15 for the general public and $13.50 for Museum Members. Tickets must be purchased online in advance at www.gcv.org/event/owl-moon.

Hit the nature trails and listen closely for owls

During Owl Moon, visitors will head out onto the nature trails at GCV&M with a naturalist for a guided hike. Groups will experience the night woods as owls do, and perhaps hear the sounds of owls nestled in the trees above. Please note, there will still be some daylight for the groups that head out onto the trails at the beginning of the evening. Guided hikes will take place from 5 – 7:45 p.m., and the earliest tours are best for those with concerns about visibility, or those who would like to hike in relative daylight. This event will take place in snow or rain – visitors are encouraged to dress for cold weather and wear good walking shoes.

Meet owls with Wild Wings

Educators from local group Wild Wings Inc. will be on-site from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the GCV&M Meeting Center Auditorium with a variety of owl species in their care. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the different types of owls local to this region: what they look like, what they eat, what sorts of environments they prefer, and hear about Wild Wing’s efforts to care for these birds.  The owl meet-and-greet with owls is not part of the guided hike, so visitors are encouraged to make time to stop into the Auditorium before or after their hike.

Warm up by a campfire or in the Meeting Center Lounge

Owl Moon guests will have the chance to see the Museum grounds after hours: enjoy a craft beverage beside an outdoor campfire, have a bite to eat in the Meeting Center Lounge, shop the Flint Hill Store, or warm up beside a roaring fire in the Lounge. Food and drink will be available 4:30 – 8 p.m., and there will be a cash bar available with selections of historical craft beer, rotating hard cider, wine, and soft drinks.

Come and glide down the lantern-lit Beaver Trail during this magical nighttime ski! On Saturday, February 11 the nature center will stay open late for cross-country skiers who would like to experience the wonder of the winter woods during the evening hours.

After your ski, warm up with a bonfire, free popcorn, and $1 hot beverages back at the nature center. Naples Brewing Company will be joining us to serve beer during the event, so come early or stay late to enjoy a pint by the bonfire!

Purchase admission in advance below or at the door for $5 per person. Ski rentals will be available for $15 per person on a first-come, first-served basis.

Museum guests who visit on February 11, 12, 13, or 14 will get a heart-shaped sticker to "show us the love." Place your heart sticker next to your favorite piece in the collection, but choose wisely–you'll only have one sticker.

Genesee Country Village & Museum is partnering again this winter with Wild Wings Inc. to host the popular Owl Moon night-hike and owl meet and greet experience on Fridays and Saturdays, February 3, 4, 10, and 11. Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to take a guided night hike with a GCV&M naturalist, meet owls with Wild Wings, hear a reading of the book “Owl Moon,” and more. Plus, the Museum’s Meeting Center will be open with food and drink available for purchase. Admission to this event is $15 for the general public and $13.50 for Museum Members. Tickets must be purchased online in advance at www.gcv.org/event/owl-moon.

Hit the nature trails and listen closely for owls

During Owl Moon, visitors will head out onto the nature trails at GCV&M with a naturalist for a guided hike. Groups will experience the night woods as owls do, and perhaps hear the sounds of owls nestled in the trees above. Please note, there will still be some daylight for the groups that head out onto the trails at the beginning of the evening. Guided hikes will take place from 5 – 7:45 p.m., and the earliest tours are best for those with concerns about visibility, or those who would like to hike in relative daylight. This event will take place in snow or rain – visitors are encouraged to dress for cold weather and wear good walking shoes.

Meet owls with Wild Wings

Educators from local group Wild Wings Inc. will be on-site from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the GCV&M Meeting Center Auditorium with a variety of owl species in their care. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the different types of owls local to this region: what they look like, what they eat, what sorts of environments they prefer, and hear about Wild Wing’s efforts to care for these birds.  The owl meet-and-greet with owls is not part of the guided hike, so visitors are encouraged to make time to stop into the Auditorium before or after their hike.

Warm up by a campfire or in the Meeting Center Lounge

Owl Moon guests will have the chance to see the Museum grounds after hours: enjoy a craft beverage beside an outdoor campfire, have a bite to eat in the Meeting Center Lounge, shop the Flint Hill Store, or warm up beside a roaring fire in the Lounge. Food and drink will be available 4:30 – 8 p.m., and there will be a cash bar available with selections of historical craft beer, rotating hard cider, wine, and soft drinks.

Featuring work from a diverse group of creators, this show explores our connection to the land through the lens of the farm and/or the automobile. Participating artists include Orlando Arriaga, Michael Ashkin, Kenneth C. Burkhart, Carrie Chalmers, Lindsey Glover, Christina Leung, Jerry Lim, Joseph Podlesnik and Constance Saltonstall.  Show runs through March 24, with gallery hours on Fridays and Sundays, 1-5pm.

FARM + AUTO is a contemplation of the changing socio-economic landscape in America, fueled by the Industrial Revolution that gave us the automobile and, in turn, aspirations for a different kind of life. In this collection of photographs, sculptures, and artifacts, we explore the impact of modernization on America’s agricultural heritage, consider the evolution of deeply American ideals of freedom and personal liberty, and redirect attention to the high environmental costs of this shift.

Winter is wonderful at GCV&M! 

Beginning on Sunday, January 8, and running throughout January and February of 2023, the GCV&M’s Meeting Center and Nature Trails will be open to visitors from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for Winter Nature Sundays! 2023 Winter Nature Sundays will take place on January 8, 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12, 19, and 26. Plus, we’ll be offering Spring Nature Sundays on select dates throughout March and April – stay tuned for more information! 

Visitors can enjoy sledding on the Great Meadow, walks in the Historic Village (please note, paths may be slippery and buildings will not be open), snowshoeing in the wintery woods, cross-country skiing (please bring your own skis), warm beverages and snacks in the toasty Meeting Center, and more! -Cabin Fever Headquarters: On February 24th, Radisson will once again be the official wristband pickup location for Corning’s biggest progressive party, Cabin Fever.  Dozens of wineries and breweries from the Finger Lakes Region will be scattered throughout various tasting sites in the Gaffer District, with commemorative glasses, complimentary shuttles, great shopping, dining promotions and more included in the wristband price.  From 5 pm to 8 pm, Radisson will be the center of activity as people pick up their credentials and then stick around for culinary cocktail samples, chef-crafted bites, and live musical entertainment.

FARM + AUTO is a contemplation of the changing socio-economic landscape in America, fueled by the Industrial Revolution that gave us the automobile and, in turn, aspirations for a different kind of life. In this collection of photographs, sculptures, and artifacts, we explore the impact of modernization on America’s agricultural heritage, consider the evolution of deeply American ideals of freedom and personal liberty, and redirect attention to the high environmental costs of this shift.

On July 2, 1879, workmen digging a road near the Taughannock House, a tourist hotel at the Taughannock Falls overlook, uncovered an apparent petrified man thought to be thousands of years old. And people came by the thousands to marvel at it. Find out the story of the Taughannock Giant, and the NEW Taughannock Giant, in this encore episode (223) of Walk in the Park from 2019. It’s the sweetest season of the year at RMSC Cumming Nature Center!

Join us March 18, 19, 25 & 26 for our 45th annual Maple Sugaring Weekends. Visitors can enjoy steaming-hot stacks of locally-sourced pancakes & sausage inside the nature center before heading outdoors for trail demonstrations that explore the science of sap and the long cultural history of tapping maple trees in our region. Your walk will end at the sugar shack, where you can see first-hand the modern process of boiling sap down to syrup and take a sip of nature’s tastiest sugar.

The pancake breakfast runs from 9am-1pm and the trail is open from 10am-2pm. ASL interpretation will be available on March 19th (details on our website).

In celebration of the return of maple sugaring season in New York State, Genesee Country Village & Museum will host its annual Maple Sugar Festival on Saturday and Sunday, March 18 - 19, and Saturday and Sunday, March 25 - 26. Explore a modern-day sugarhouse where fresh syrup is boiling, then journey into a 19th-century sugar camp staffed by costumed historical interpreters to learn about the techniques and tools used by early settlers used to collect sap and make maple sugar. Head into the Historic Village to see maple sugar used in historic kitchens, sausage making, timber sports with representatives from SUNY ESF, Hodinöhsö:ni’ (Haudenosaunee) cultural traditions and storytelling, and more. Follow the history of maple sugaring in New York State

Visitors to the Maple Sugar Festival can tap into the history of maple in the 19^th century by following the tap lines from sugar maple trees along the Maple History Trail to the Sugarhouse at GCV&M’s Nature Center. See how the wood-fired evaporator transforms fresh, clear sap into thick, amber maple syrup and learn from GCV&M naturalists about the tree tapping process and history of sap collection. Plus, learn about sugar maples and the collection techniques employed to keep the sugar bush sustainable.

Foodies will delight in opportunities to sample, savor, and indulge in all things maple at this year’s Maple Sugar Festival.
