By Lorraine Hansberry

The members of the Younger family dream bigger than the small house where they live on the south side of Chicago in the 1950s. When their deceased father’s insurance money comes through, those dreams might actually become reality. Walter Lee wants to run his own business and earn financial independence, but his sister Beneatha dreams of attending medical school. Meanwhile, their mother Lena wants to move them all to a bigger home in a white neighborhood. What will finally allow the Youngers to move up in the world, and who will have their dreams deferred? National Players is honored to portray this award-winning drama with a universal story about an African American family dealing with prejudice, history, and a world where everything changes.

Please Note: This show contains mature language and themes.

Curriculum Ties: Literature, Theatre, History

Harriet Tubman re-enactor, Maggie Moore-Holley.
A conversation with Harriet Tubman

Buffet lunch from Café 108 & performance by Harriet Tubman re-enactor, Maggie Moore-Holley.

About this event

Renowned abolitionist and humanitarian Harriet Tubman, as portrayed by Maggie Moore-Holley, will present her story “A Conversation with Harriet Tubman” on Wednesday, May 11 at the Auburn Public Theater's Stage Right.

Tubman lived an embattled life from childhood until her death because of the situation in which she was born. Although her life was constantly interrupted by one battle after another, she was eager to get involved in a struggle that changed the course of American history, the Civil War. She faced and overcame each new battle with the same determination, courage, and faith that helped her to “keep-a-going” against tremendous odds.

Maggie Moore-Holley, married and the mother of two adult children, is retired from the Monroe County Department of Social Services, and is a member of Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church; AKOMA, the African-American Women’s Gospel Choir; and AKWAABA, the Heritage Associates.

The $25 ticket includes a buffet lunch from Cafe 108 (sandwich, soup & salad, coffee & bottled water). Lunch will be held from 12:00pm-12:30pm, and Maggie's performance will be from 12:30pm-1:30pm.

Runners heading down trail at RMSC Cumming Nature Center.
Frost Town Trail Fest

Explore every inch of the nature center with a 10k or 25k trail run! Frost Town Trail Fest is a trail race presented by Ironwood Adventure Works that celebrates the beauty, recreational opportunities, and environmental mission of the Cumming Nature Center.

The routes explore some of the best terrain the Bristol Hills has to offer while giving runners rare access to landscapes neighboring the nature center. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Cumming Nature Center’s environmental and educational programming.

Bring along your family and friends to cheer you on as you finish—there are plenty of trails for them to explore at their own pace during the race, along with a picnic area for rest and celebration after the run.

RACE SCHEDULE

25k Trail Run | 9am
The challenging 25k course is a single loop that circumnavigates both the Cumming Nature Center and an adjacent property managed by The Nature Conservancy. A steep winding ascent and then descent through historic logging roads initiate 25k runners to this stout cross terrain trail challenge. Next, after traversing through the well-tended Cumming Nature Center Trail system, runners take the trail less traveled across the rugged Rattlesnake Hill ridgeline east of Lake Honeoye. Aid stations will be available at approximately 4 mile intervals for a total of three support stations on the course.

10k Trail Run | 10am
For a quicker and less remote challenge, the 10k course covers the best of the Cumming Nature Center trail system. Less elevation gain and a more runnable course make this a great first 10k or a fast trail loop for seasoned trail runners.

Kids Fun Run | 12pm
Bring your junior trail runners along for a free 1.5 mile kids fun run! To participate, just show up with a parent between 11am and 11:45am to get your race bib. See the registration page for details!
