Jim Breuer: Live and Let Laugh

Not long after Jim Breuer did his first official standup gig in Clearwater, Florida, in 1989, industry folks began asking him, “What’s your point of view?” “I don’t know…” He searched for a meaningful response to a ridiculous question. “To make people laugh?”

The freewheeling, New York bred comic storyteller – who made the list of Comedy Central’s “100 Greatest Standups of All Time” – is hotter than ever, a global touring sensation and regular presence on radio and television whose rabid audience, he’s thrilled to note, is filled with “lifetimers.” Once folks see him live, they’re hooked. Breuer estimates that 78% of his fans have seen him “five, six, seven” times. It’s becoming a family thing, with parents even bringing young teens to see the family man and father of three daughters, all providing genius “dad” material for his sets. Having evolved both personally and professionally since the beginning, Breuer’s pleased to say he’s been F-word free for ten years and counting.

Breuer came to national attention during his seasons on Saturday Night Live (1995-98), a rebuilding era whose cast featured Will Ferrell, David Spade and Norm McDonald. But don’t call him “Goat Boy” (one of his characters on SNL) or ask him to do his Joe Pesci impression. Those things are eons ago. Some even still associate him with “Half Baked,” a stoner comedy flick from around that time that starred Dave Chappelle and featured cameos by Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg and Tommy Chong.

The fans who got into Breuer in the new millennium were drawn into his whirlwind journey through his Comedy Central specials such as “Hardcore” (2002) and “Let’s Clear The Air” (2009), one of the highest rated comedy specials in the network’s history – popularly known as his “coming out party” as a dad, cleaning up his act and focusing on the fun and foibles of family life. His next special “And Laughter For All” (2013), became the highest rated original comedy special on EPIX to date, earning it’s spot as a family favorite for it’s relatable and multi-generational humor. His latest special “Comic Frenzy” (2015) is currently available on Amazon Prime.

Many of Breuer’s newer fans know him from the multitude of hilarious hours he’s spent as a guest on Sirius XM’s “The Howard Stern Show.” Howard’s hosted some of pop culture’s biggest comedy icons over the past 30 years, yet Breuer gets people telling him he’s their favorite guest ever. “Howard’s audiences know comedy,” he says. “If they come and I’m not funny, they’re not coming back.” That’s never happened and never going to. Breuer was also the host of “Fridays with Jim Breuer” Sirius XM, originally known as “Breuer Unleashed.” He currently hosts a podcast called “The Jim Breuer Podcast,” which is available on iTunes and JimBreuer.com.

Over the years, Breuer has been something of a multi-media sensation currently appearing alongside Kevin James on “Kevin Can Wait” on CBS as well as popular films “Zookeeper,” “Dick,” “Titan A.E.” and “Beer League”; hosting MTV’s popular “Beach House” and VH1’s “Web Junk 20”; and being featured on “Comedy Jam,” “This Is Not Happening,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” and “The Marriage Ref.”

Since 2015, he’s shared his dual passions for comedy and baseball (particularly his New York Mets) with thousands via his video recaps of games that he posts on Facebook. Their viral impact has been massive, with clips airing on the MLB Network and ESPN Sportscenter among others, and even inspiring Mets fans in other cities to hang with Breuer to root their team on. A die-hard metalhead, Breuer made his musical debut, Songs From The Garage in 2016. Produced by Rob Caggiano (Anthrax, Volbeat) the album features tracks such as “Raising Teenage Girls,” the throwback anthem “Old School” and “Mr. Rock n’ Roll” with the one and only Brian Johnson of AC/DC.

All Breuer aficionados know that family is everything to him, and his mission is to share the highs and lows, find the humor in the day to day, laughing with the triumphs and tragedies and using comedy as a tool to conquer fear – as he did when posting videos of his wife going through cancer treatments the past few years. In 2008, Breuer set out for his “Breuniversity Tour” with his 85-year-old father and a film crew. The footage that was captured blended together to create “The Jim Breuer Road Journals,” which showcased what life is like on the road with a comedian and his father. Videos from that tour also sparked the making of his documentary “More Than Me,” which was shown at the 2009 Montreal Film Festival. In line with his love of family. “Comic Frenzy” focused on what Breuer’s life (and all our lives) truly consist of: dealing with the elderly, becoming our parents’ caretakers and what it takes to be a “marriage warrior.”

“I’m a deep-rooted family guy with hardcore blue collar roots,” he says. “My father was a World War II vet and my mom lost her first husband to WWII. As a child growing up in Valley Stream, New York, I lived in low income housing, then an attic apartment, to eventually moving down the street into a home of our own, always surrounded by faith and love. My career reached a new level when I started to raise a family of my own and realized I should stick to what I know, what everyone could relate to no matter their socio-economic status. My oldest daughter just went to college and we’ve dealt these past few years with mortality issues, and I’m just there to find the funny in that. It all started with ‘Let’s Clear the Air,’ which focused on me being a new father who came from another world and who wasn’t prepared for the responsibilities at all.”

The crazy state of the world today makes Breuer’s upcoming 2018 tour Jim Breuer Live all the more essential, as we seek perspective and comic relief from the day to day insanity that drives our 24.7 news cycle and social media. Breuer’s set will be decidedly non-political, but he will have much to impart about the foolishness of ruining our lives over media-generated frenzies that we have no control over. “My huge focus is, listen, stop getting caught up in the hoopla the news, politics and all that jazz,” he says. “If every day you wake up and you’re watching five to six hours of it, it starts to darken your soul. If you spent even ten percent of that time on your wife, husband, child or someone else you love, your personal life would get better and you could help so many people. I’m here to say that life isn’t that horrendous. Can you still eat? Can you still watch your 60” plasma TV? Call me when you have to eat a squirrel for breakfast, okay? Do something you can control that’s good, because you can’t fight hate with more hate. Let’s concentrate on the most important things in life.”

“My job as a comic is to talk about the many great loves of my life, recognizing that yes, we are all on borrowed time but we can still enjoy life with a passion and not get caught up in all the madness,” Breuer adds. “There are always things that can become an obstacle to our happiness, and the big three for me that I smack into most are divisions in the family, financial struggles and health issues. For me, there’s no better feeling in the world than making someone laugh and knowing that I’ve inspired or healed someone. It’s nice when people tell me I’m funny, but the ones that keep me going are the ones who come up to me and say, ‘Can I just tell you, I just lost my mom, and you healed me. That’s the first time I’ve laughed in ages.’ Or ‘My wife and I were fighting, we just experienced death. We knew seeing you was going to help. Thank you. We needed this so much.’ We’re not here for very long, and we’re all stuck here together. Everybody needs to laugh and be uplifted. We’re here to take care of others. I’m on a mission to lift you in the only way I know how.”

Patsy Cline Tribute Featuring Amberley Beatty

The look and sound of one of the greatest singers in the history of country music, the late Patsy Cline is brought to life when Amberley steps on stage. As the Legendary Patsy Cline.  With the western garb, bright red lips, and the sultry sound, she captures the essence of Patsy Cline.

Amberley has been wowing audiences with her Walking After Midnight Tribute all over southern Ontario and through parts of Michigan. Performing this tribute has been quite ride. Early in 2008 an indie record label contacted Miss Beatty and purposed doing a duet CD with Allen Karl of Century II Records. January 2009 Amberley was signed to Century II Records and recorded “If I Could Spend Today Loving You” in  Nashville Tennessee. Amberley is looking forward to the next project.

“I have been performing since I was 15 years old in many theatrical presentations on Kitchener’s grand stage The Center In The Square. Though I have been privileged enough to have has some fabulous lead rolls in many productions it is quite a privilege to pay tribute to one of my idols. I believe now I have found the roll of a life time, to take an audience back in time when the Great Patsy Cline captured audiences with her distinct sound and power of emotion.“

Take a step back in time with Amberley Beatty and her Legendary Patsy Cline tribute to the one and only Miss Patsy Cline. The costuming is authentic, ranging from western to the latter part of Patsy’s career of evening gowns and tight fitting t-shirt dresses. There is never ending interest as every set is different from the next.

Blood, Sweat & Tears

No one can argue BS&T invented a new style of music.

Blood, Sweat & Tears is not the first band to ever use a horn section, but they are the first to fuse it with rock, jazz, and some blues thrown in for good measure.

From the first ensemble in the late sixties practicing in a loft on Bleeker Street in New York’s Greenwich Village and having crowds clapping on the street below between songs, founding member and drummer Bobby Colomby knew they were on the right course. Since then, the band has never stopped touring for over 50 years.

The first Blood, Sweat & Tears album, “Child is Father to the Man”, was released to little fan fair. After band member changes and replacing a lead singer, the second album self-named “Blood Sweat & Tears” was a success, rising to the top of the charts for 7 weeks and yielding 3 top 5 singles. The album received the Grammy Award for “Album of the Year” in 1970 beating out the Beatles’ “Abby Road”. That album went on to earn quadruple Platinum status with sales well over 4 million units.

Blood Sweat & Tears went on to receive 10 Grammy nominations and won 3. Other prestigious awards and recognitions include: The Playboy Jazz & Pop award, the “Blood, Sweat & Tears” 1969 album induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002, and in 2008 they were recognized as an Honorary Ambassador of Peace Republic of Korea.

Blood Sweat & Tears performed on Sunday August 17, 1969 at Woodstock same day as Jimi Hendrix among other great bands. And 50 years later at Bethel Woods,NY the site of Woodstock  2019.

Blood Sweat & Tears has had many firsts. They are the first rock band to tour behind the former Iron Curtain, and the first rock band to play Las Vegas among major protest from fans who felt the band sold out.

Blood Sweat & Tears has had many configurations over its 50 plus years of touring but one thing for sure is that the music is timeless, and fans are never disappointed. BS&T tours with the greatest musicians available, stars in their own right (most coming off major tours with other artists). BS&T still headlines jazz festivals all over the world. BS&T only performs about 60 shows a year so it’s a rare treat to see them live.

Bobby Colomby found our latest Vocalist Keith Paluso  you may remember Keith from 2018 season of “The Voice” Critics say Keith is the best singer since David Clayton-Thomas.

Bobby’s other find is Dylan Elise Bobby found Dylan on Youtube and flew him from New Zealand to join the band.

The band members are always looking to inspire the next generation of musicians so don’t be shy walk up and talk to them.

To this day Bobby Colomby (founding member) still hand picks the musicians for every tour. Colomby still uses the same theory: “Great Musicians Make Great Music”.

About Dr. Konstantin Frank:
Dr. Konstantin Frank ignited the “Vinifera Revolution” a movement that forever changed the course of wine growing in the Finger Lakes and the United States. Dr. Frank’s vision, knowledge and determination are credited with elevating the New York wine industry from a state of happy mediocrity to a level that today commands world attention.

In 1962, merely a decade after arriving in America, Dr. Frank founded Vinifera Wine Cellars. The winery quickly earned a reputation for spectacular Rieslings and its original planting of vines formed the backbone of New York’s world-class wines and champagnes.

Never content to rest on his laurels, Dr. Frank’s son, Willy Frank continued the tradition of excellence and determination. Willy amazed the industry in the late 1980’s by releasing an exquisite sparkling wine made at his very own Chateau Frank. Chateau Frank adheres to the “methode champenoise” using the three classic French Champagne grape varieties successfully creating another first for the Finger Lakes Region of New York – world class sparkling wines.

Museum filled with flowers
Dutch Connection

Thousands of blooms fill George Eastman’s Conservatory and Palm House with the sights and scents of spring in this annual display. When George Eastman traveled through the Netherlands on a bicycle trip in 1895, he was amazed at the “blaze of color” he saw as he cycled by the fields of flowers. He wrote to his mother that he wanted to have the same effect in his garden at home in Rochester. During Eastman’s residency in the 900 East Avenue mansion between 1905 and 1932, he ordered tens of thousands of bulbs from Holland every year (except 1918, when a wartime coal shortage forced him to close his greenhouses). He usually ordered in large quantities—mostly tulips, narcissus, and hyacinths for indoor forcing, as well as tulips for the outdoor beds. He sometimes ordered amaryllis, azaleas, and begonias. He preferred various shades of orange, red, pink, lavender, yellow, and white—generally grouped monochromatically when he displayed them. A hundred years after Eastman’s bicycling trip, the Eastman Museum started the annual floral show Dutch Connection to pay homage to Eastman’s practice of buying and planting thousands of bulbs.

The present-day display is based on Eastman’s original orders placed with Dutch bulb-importing companies. The cultivation process began last July, with 14,000 bulbs growing since late September. Volunteers and staff potted the tulips, daffodils, and hyacinth, and the pots were then placed in a root cellar in Highland Park, graciously provided by the Monroe County Parks Department. Lucas Greenhouses in Fairport generously provided space to store thousands of the potted bulbs leading up to the display. Finally, the potted bulbs are brought to the museum, where they are thoughtfully arranged in a spectacular display throughout the Conservatory, Colonnade, and Palm House. Tropical orchids courtesy of the Genesee Region Orchid Society are also displayed throughout the mansion.

Dutch Connection is generously supported by Gerald and Karen Sue Kral and by St. John’s. Root cellar space is provided by the Monroe County Parks Department, and greenhouse space is provided by Lucas Greenhouses, Fairport.

"Vintage Tweets: Suffrage Era Postcards" A program by Carol Crossed

Geneva, N.Y.: On Wednesday, February 19 at 7 p.m., the Geneva Historical Society will host author Carol Crossed to discuss her book Vintage Tweets: Suffrage Era Postcards. This special program will be held in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Women's Suffrage Amendment (also known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment) and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Susan B. Anthony.

Vintage Tweets chronicles the fight for the 19th Amendment through thought-provoking, often amusing, and sometimes shocking images and short, pithy messages on complex domestic issues—marriage, childbirth, violence—and public and political topics like abolition, temperance and dress reform. Crossed, who is the founder and president of the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum in Adams, Massachusetts, used color  photos of suffrage postcards from her private collection in the 218-page hardcover book.

Reviewer Sheila O’Connor-Ambrose of Emory University states, “An eye catching story of American history through the exchange of penny postcards, Vintage Tweets reveals how hard-fought and at times bitter were the social struggles that played out among ordinary citizens over women’s suffrage, abolition, prohibition.”

This program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For more information about the program, call the Geneva Historical Society office at 315-789-5151.

The Geneva History Museum is located at 543 South Main Street, Geneva, N.Y. Parking is available on the street or in the lot at Trinity Episcopal Church.

In d(ov)etail two found worlds interlock: a box of a stranger’s slides and a box of discarded books. Travel images sliced then spliced, prose slit then knit, these discards give birth (ov) in fragmentation, assemblage, sequence and accident. This installation of slide projection, newspaper, and website—an amalgamation and culmination of three separate installations—emphasizes cultural production bound to media temporality. The various stages of interlocking also obfuscate cultural heritage in favor of non-linear conjunction of different times. From this: a tension between what we dream (idealistically easy borderless futures) and the semantic limits of those dreams (pragmatic bounded histories).

Fuel

Fuel formed in 1993 while playing the club circuit in and around Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The band signed to Sony Records and in 1998 released their critically lauded, debut album Sunburn with the massive hit single “Shimmer”. Their second album Something Like Human took the band to a new level of stardom, hitting multi-platinum status driven by the singles “Innocent” and “Hemorrhage,” which remained at #1 for ten weeks. In 2003 Fuel released their third record Natural Selection, and found success at radio again with the hit song “Falls On Me”.

At that point the band had sold over 3.5 million records in the U.S alone, and had scored a trio of releases with top five singles. The band had headlined its own sold out tours, as well as supporting the likes of Aerosmith and Kid Rock. But even what seems like the best of circumstances can prove to be difficult and unhappy with the direction and lack of unity inside the band, Brett Scallions amicably parted ways with Fuel in 2004.

During his time away from Fuel, Brett continued to write music and toured with Ray Manzarek & Robby Krieger of the Doors.  “When I left Fuel I was miserable, it did not feel like a band anymore,” says Brett, continuing: “Unity was non-existent. Performing those amazing Doors songs with two legends, who are two of the architects of that sound was eye opening, life changing, and opened a whole new perspective on music and life. I realized much music is about freedom, and not being confined to formats.”

In 2014 Fuel released Puppet Strings, on MRI/Red. Catapulted by the first single, the driving, hypnotic “Soul To Preach To”, the album entered the Billboard rock charts at #1.  The fans spoke loud and clear to the band and “Cold Summer” became the second single. The Fuelies were right, as “Cold Summer” became a staple on rock radio cracking the top 20 at rock radio throughout the summer, with a video that is a classic throwback to when rock videos were fun. “Rock n Roll is very much alive on this record,” says Scallions, “Fuel is fully reignited, and it feels like we are just getting started.”

Cellar Food & Wine Pairing
Ravines "Taste of the Alps" - Cellar Tour & Pairing

When exploring the Alps, you'll find an irresistible, savory dish called Raclette (RAH-KLET), which pairs perfectly with our dry white wines. Similar to the Swiss & French Alps region, Ravines makes expressive, aromatic whites to pair with this alpine fare that's highlighted by melted raclette cheese.

Enjoy mini potatoes, cured ham, French bread, cornichons along with fresh local cheese, prepared and melted using a Raclette maker in front of you, tableside, with mustard and butter.

A maximum of two tables per seating will gather for this experience in our renovated, turn-of-the-century barn in Geneva and be led by one of our warm and knowledgeable Ravinista hosts to the wine cellar. While seated at our antique farm table amongst the wine barrels, our host will lead you through a flight of five of our best white wines paired with this alpine dish.

The Fight of our Foremothers

Did you know that 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of Susan B. Anthony's birth and marks the 100th anniversary of women getting the right to vote?  Quite a year!

You might not know the story behind the passage of the 19th amendment and the role the women of Sterling and upstate NY played in making that happen.  We are presenting a dramatic reading of letters between Susan B and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and others -- brought to us by Dorothy Cooper, who was previously a docent of the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester.  She has performed this "play" in various locations and we are delighted to be able to offer it here.
