Dreaming in Color: The Davide Turconi Collection of Early Cinema

Dreaming in Color: The Davide Turconi Collection of Early Cinema (January 13–June 24, 2018) is dedicated to a unique collection of more than 23,000 original nitrate frames of 35mm films from the early years of cinema (1897–1915).

One of the world’s leading experts in the history of silent cinema, Davide Turconi (1911–2005) gathered these rare frames in the 1960s from a large collection of films acquired by Jesuit priest Josef-Alexis Joye (1852–1919) in Basel, Switzerland. In Basel, Joye had established an educational institution, the Borromäum, that focused on social programs, such as caring for and instructing orphans, providing Sunday school classes, and offering education programs for recent Catholic émigrés and the working class.

In the early 1900s, Joye began to collect films and incorporate them into his lectures. These films have become known as the Josef Joye Collection. Joye acquired a wide variety of international films over a number of years from the secondhand market in Switzerland and Germany. After he left Basel in 1911, the films remained at the Borromäum. At the time of Turconi’s discovery of the collection, the prints were in various stages of chemical decay. Fearing that no trace would remain of these precious films, Turconi took brief clips (typically two or three frames per clipping) from each of them, thus preserving an invaluable documentation on the color techniques employed by film production companies at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Today, the Turconi and Joye Collections are a primary source for the study of early cinema, and of color technology in particular. (The complete surviving films are now at the British Film Institute’s National Archive in London.) The George Eastman Museum acquired the Turconi Collection in the 1990s, and a massive digitization project was completed after twelve years of painstaking work. The sheer beauty of the nitrate frames and their colors can now be shared with the public.

The exhibition will include photographs from all of his major series to date—the best-known of which include Hitler Moves East (1972–75), Modern Romance (1983–85), The Wild West (1986–89), Desire (1991–92), Blackface (1995–98), Barbie (1997–98), Baseball (1998–2004), and History (2010–15)—in addition to never-before-exhibited outtakes, commissions, and archival materials.

Gail Albert Halaban: Out My Window

Gail Albert Halaban’s Out My Window is both a penetrating exploration of modern community and a group of moving and beautiful photographs. The project started when she moved to New York from Los Angeles. In an effort to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation, she began to use her art as a way of connecting with her neighbors. She starts by explaining her work to potential participants and asking for their involvement. If they agree, Albert Halaban facilitates communication among the neighbors and arranges to photograph one from the window of the other. In this way, Albert Halaban employs photography as a form of social engagement. For despite platitudes about modern technology making the world a smaller place, this same virtual environment can also result in feelings of isolation and extreme self-absorption. By connecting strangers who live across the street from each other, Albert Halaban’s expertly composed, beautifully rendered, large-scale photographs encourage viewers to take a fresh look at the people they see every day.

David Levinthal: War, Myth, Desire

David Levinthal: War, Myth, Desire is the first museum retrospective of the artist’s work in more than twenty years. The exhibition will include nearly 200 prints, along with related books and ephemera, giving visitors a unique opportunity to consider Levinthal’s most recent work alongside key works from the full scope of his career.

Since the mid-1970s, David Levinthal has been exploring the relationship between photographic imagery and the fantasies, myths, events, and characters that shape contemporary America’s mental landscape.

Kids can test their abilities in a firkin foot race or caber and sheaf tosses. And if that’s not enough, there will be plenty of vendors selling imports, keepsakes and more.

Unlike every other fortuneteller in Brooklyn, Maude can actually predict the future.  Seriously.  And she never, ever lies.  Until Jeremy, that is.  But really, who could bring themselves to tell that nebbishy accountant he’s going to die alone.  Her one little fib, however, leads to a series of unpredictable repercussions and shenanigans that forever change both their lives and shows Maude how even destiny can be re-written.

Ruby Velle & the Seratones
Garden Vibes: Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics at the George Eastman Museum

Deep, raw funk. Stax-style Southern soul. Uplifting Motown-channeling anthems. Atlanta’s Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics are the heirs to the thrones of the old-school masters. But they’re much more than just a group of revivalists trying to create a period piece. Powerhouse singer Velle and her band will settle for nothing less than bringing these classic sounds glimmering into the now with a fresh new modern sheen.

Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics have made a name for themselves captivating audiences with their stirring live performances. They’re a world-class modern soul revue topped off with Velle’s sultry voice. She deftly toggles between sweetly crooned R&B tunes and expertly belted barn-burning get-downs that can instantly jolt a roomful of wallflowers into a wild dance party.

Kids Free Week

Bring the kids for a day of family (and budget) friendly fun! All kids ages 17 and under are free admission between the dates of Tuesday, June 26 and Sunday, July 1.

During the week, there will a special focus on youth activities throughout the Historic Village, from games—including some little-known today— to gatherings and activities a 19th-century youngster would have experienced.

Young visitors can also test a two-man saw and other long-ago chores like stoking fires, carrying wood and grating kitchen spices.

In addition, there’s the museum’s new lambs and the powerful oxen team to meet as well as a 19th-century classroom to attend and a cooper to chat with as he crafts wooden buckets. Kids can learn to knit, punch a tin design, see how they would be been instructed to behave in the 1800s, be amazed at Professor Lowe’s “magic gas” and treated to the sounds of a glass harmonica.

There are nature trails to hike and a gallery with western art and historic clothing to explore and where, in a new photo booth, they can become part of a popular work of art.

On the weekend there will be historic base ball played by 1868 rules at Silver Base Ball Park, the only recreated 19th-century base ball park in the country.

The Fine Wines of Northwest Seneca Wine Tour

Once each month during the prime season, E!FLX heads up to Geneva to explore some of the best wines along the northwestern shores of Seneca Lake. Join us on this special full-day tour where you will discover top producers, explore their commitment to process when making their fine wines, and taste the end result in your glass with custom-designed tastings created to show off the unique expression of each winery and quality being produced along this section of Seneca Lake.

We start our day at Anthony Road Wine Company.  John and Ann Martini moved to Anthony Road in 1973 “at the urging of a friend that touted the joys of grape growing in the Finger Lakes”.  Over 40 years later, the second generation has fully vested themselves in the continuation of the quality foundation laid by their parents.  Meet members of this winemaking family, visit their on-premise garden and taste their stellar wines created by winemaker Peter Becraft paired with specially-crafted, farm-sourced food selections.

Next, we head over to Bellangelo on North Seneca to enjoy an alfresco casual lunch out on their deck with a stunning view of Seneca Lake.  Each guest will be able to choose from the selection of Bellangelo’s finely crafted wines to enjoy with the picnic fare provided via The Belhurst dining team.

After lunch, we make our way to Billsboro Winery for a memorable tasting experience.   Enjoy a private tasting in the winery’s wine library featuring the beautifully distinctive wines of winemaker and owner Vinny Aliperti.  We will showcase two of his wines paired with CaryMo Chocolates.  You may even have your tasting hosted by the chocolatier Cary Becraft who pours at Billsboro when she’s not making her amazing chocolates!

Our final stop of the day is Fox Run Vineyards.   Just as with the other stops on this tour, the wines of Fox Run Vineyards are recognized as some of the finest in the region.   Twenty-two years ago, owners Ruth and Scott Osborn, recognized the talent and skill of winemaker Peter Bell.   Since then, Peter has not only solidified the reputation of Fox Run for fine wine making, but has raised the entire bar of the region with his consulting skills and collaborative nature.  During the tasting, we will explore a carefully curated selection of Fox Run wines that demonstrates Peter’s quest for optimal expression, innovation and collaboration.

Price: $159.00 per person. This price includes the transportation, tasting fees, added services, lunch, and special food pairings. This tour is a public tour and requires a minimum of 5 total guests in order to run the tour at the listed price. Alternate touring options are available for tours that do not meet this minimum.

This tour is also available for groups of 5+ guests Sunday-Friday upon request. Please call 607-233-4818 if you are interested in this tour for your party.

A 12% service charge will be added to reservations with 8 or more guests. If you book online, you will receive an updated confirmation email containing that extra charge within 2 business days. If you have any questions you can reach our office at 607-233-4818, Monday-Friday, 9AM-5PM.
