Events take place all year round in the Finger Lakes region. From lakeside (and on the lake) events in the summer to harvest activities in the fall, snowmobiling or snowshoeing in the winter, and festivals in the springtime! Step inside a glassmaker’s studio to blow your own glass, stroll Main Street on a food tour, or gather for live music and theater performances. Browse the list of Finger Lakes events below or search the specific dates you will be visiting to see everything going on in the region.

Great Events that Happen Every Year

Below, you will find dozens of great events happening throughout the year with many of them happening annually. If you have memories of favorite annual Finger Lakes events from childhood such as cardboard boat regattas, hot air balloon festivals, cheese, apple or pumpkin festivals, to name a few, it’s likely that event that still takes place or, has likely improved your enjoyment. If you see a special event that piques your interest but can’t make it, click on the event anyway, it might be coming back next year!

Events Added Daily

Make sure to check back frequently to see if any other great events have been added. Events are added daily by businesses from every sector and interest so if there is nothing that sparks your interest now, there very well could be soon!

David Levinthal: War, Myth, Desire

David Levinthal: War, Myth, Desire is the first museum retrospective of the artist’s work in more than twenty years. The exhibition will include nearly 200 prints, along with related books and ephemera, giving visitors a unique opportunity to consider Levinthal’s most recent work alongside key works from the full scope of his career.

Since the mid-1970s, David Levinthal has been exploring the relationship between photographic imagery and the fantasies, myths, events, and characters that shape contemporary America’s mental landscape. The exhibition will include photographs from all of his major series to date—the best-known of which include Hitler Moves East (1972–75), Modern Romance (1983–85), The Wild West (1986–89), Desire (1991–92), Blackface (1995–98), Barbie (1997–98), Baseball (1998–2004), and History (2010–15)—in addition to never-before-exhibited outtakes, commissions, and archival materials.

Brooklyn
Gail Albert Halaban: Out My Window

Gail Albert Halaban’s Out My Window is both a penetrating exploration of modern community and a group of moving and beautiful photographs. The project started when she moved to New York from Los Angeles. In an effort to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation, she began to use her art as a way of connecting with her neighbors. She starts by explaining her work to potential participants and asking for their involvement. If they agree, Albert Halaban facilitates communication among the neighbors and arranges to photograph one from the window of the other. In this way, Albert Halaban employs photography as a form of social engagement. For despite platitudes about modern technology making the world a smaller place, this same virtual environment can also result in feelings of isolation and extreme self-absorption. By connecting strangers who live across the street from each other, Albert Halaban’s expertly composed, beautifully rendered, large-scale photographs encourage viewers to take a fresh look at the people they see every day.

The George Eastman Museum’s Wish You Were Here lecture series continues on September 13

The George Eastman Museum has announced the fall lineup for its Wish You Were Here lecture series. For more than 17 years, this popular photography lecture series has brought artists and photojournalists to the Rochester to share their stories and photographs from around the world. The series, which kicked off on August 23 with actor and photographer, Jason Lee will continue on Thursday, September 13 at 6 p.m., with photographer Andrea Modica.

For decades, Modica has used an 8×10‑inch view camera to create portraits of wide-ranging subjects: minor league baseball players in Florida, a fifteen-year portrait of a girl from Upstate New York, a family-run slaughterhouse in Colorado, human skulls found on the grounds of a mental hospital, a horse clinic in Italy, high school best friends, and, most recently, participants in the January 1 Mummer’s Day Parade in South Philadelphia. Her photographs have been featured in many magazines, including the New York Times Magazine, the New Yorker, Newsweek, and American Photo.

The Wish You Were Here series continues on October 11 at 6 p.m., with Kiliii Yuyan: On the Sea Ice, We Wear White—The Importance of Cultural Immersion in Photography. Yuyan’s mission is to rewrite the narratives of minority and indigenous cultures—especially those who live close to the land. Against a backdrop of ecological upheaval, he shows us the essential connection to nature that has kept traditional cultures alive for millennia. From being adopted by an Inuit whaling family to becoming a shoulder to cry on for suicidal youth, he has gone deep into native communities to create photographs that are changing the perception of modern indigenous culture. Yuyan is an indigenous Hezhe and Chinese-American photographer, filmmaker, and journalist whose award winning work has been published by the Nature Conservancy, NPR, Pacific Standard, and National Geographic Traveler.

The final lecture in the series will be held on November 15 at 6 p.m. with Anastasia Samoylova: The Flood of Images, The Images of Flood. Samoylova is a Miami-based artist and photographer whose work examines environmentalism, consumerism, and the picturesque through the tools and language of digital media and commercial photography. Her work participates in the landscape photography tradition while scrutinizing the consumable products it generates.

All Wish You Were Here lectures will be held in the Dryden Theatre, and admission is free for museum members. Admission for nonmembers: $6 general, $3 students (with ID). Each talk is followed by a book signing. Doors open 45 minutes before the lecture begins, and the museum’s café will be open for dinner, coffee, or dessert.

The Wish You Were Here photography lecture series is generously supported by museum member Dr. Thomas N. Tischer.

Wings & Wheels in Hammondsport
Wings & Wheels in Hammondsport

Since 2003, the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum and many very dedicated volunteers have held the “Seaplane Homecoming” each fall on Keuka Lake, right where Curtiss made some of his greatest contributions to aviation. In the early 1900’s it took bravery, ingenuity and cunning to do what he did and every aviation enthusiast owes him a debt of gratitude.

This year is no exception. Thanks to the generosity of the owner/pilots, a wide variety of Seaplanes will gather at Depot Park. You will have a chance to get up close to the aircraft and talk to the proud owners. You’ll learn a great deal about why water flying is so satisfying and exciting. It’s a very unique way to experience the freedom that being a pilot provides and they love to talk about it.

George Eastman Museum Open for FREE on Sept 22

The George Eastman Museum will be open to the public for FREE on Saturday, September 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the spirit of Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day, the Eastman Museum is opening its doors to all visitors for the day to encourage the Rochester community to experience the photography exhibitions David Levinthal: War, Myth, Desire and Gail Albert Halaban: Out My Window, and the History of Photography Gallery, as well as hands-on activities for all ages in the Discovery Room.

Additionally, as part of the City of Rochester’s celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Douglass, the Eastman Museum is hosting a free discussion at noon on September 22 about the challenges that exist in thoroughly researching and accessing information about Douglass.

Looking for Frederick Douglass: Resources in Libraries, Museums, and Archives

Saturday, September 22

12 p.m., Dryden Theatre

Free admission

Frederick Douglass was a highly visible public figure, a popular orator, and a prolific writer and memoirist; he has also been called “the 19th century’s most photographed American.” Yet, two hundred years after his birth, locating and bringing together documentary records of Douglass’s life can be a challenge. While the circumstances of his life and legacy certainly play a role, this elusiveness may have as much to do with the differing standards and practices among libraries, museums, and archives that hold such materials. The discussion will be moderated by the George Eastman Museum’s Head of Library and Archives, Ken Fox, and will include the following panelists:

  • Jessica Lacher-Feldman, assistant dean and the Joseph N. Lambert and Harold B. Schleifer Director of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation, University of Rochester
  • Jennifer Morris, archivist, Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum, Washington, DC
  • Heather Shannon, associate curator, Department of Photography, George Eastman Museum

In addition to the free discussion and access the museum’s galleries and historic mansion, the Eastman Museum is offering the following free tours throughout the day:

  • 10:30 a.m. & 2 p.m. Historic Mansion Tour
  • 11 a.m. Gallery Tour in Sign Language (register in advance: tours@eastman.org)
  • 12 p.m. & 3:30 p.m. Garden Tour
  • 1 p.m. Gallery Tour

Museum Day is an annual celebration hosted by Smithsonian magazine where participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. The George Eastman Museum will be participating again this year, but visitors to the museum will not need to present a Museum Day Ticket, as all visitors will be admitted for free that day.

About the George Eastman Museum

Founded in 1947, the George Eastman Museum is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the largest film archives in the United States, located on the historic Rochester estate of entrepreneur and philanthropist George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography. Its holdings comprise more than 400,000 photographs, 28,000 motion picture films, the world’s preeminent collection of photographic and cinematographic technology, one of the leading libraries of books related to photography and cinema, and extensive holdings of documents and other objects related to George Eastman. As a research and teaching institution, the Eastman Museum has an active publishing program and, through its two joint master’s degree programs with the University of Rochester, makes critical contributions to the fields of film preservation and of photographic preservation and collection management. For more information, visit eastman.org.

"Looking for Frederick Douglass: Resources in Libraries, Museums, and Archives" at the Eastman Museum

Frederick Douglass was a highly visible public figure, a popular orator, and a prolific writer and memoirist; he has also been called “the 19th century’s most photographed American.” Two hundred years after his birth, however, locating and bringing together scattered documentary records of Douglass’s life can be a challenge. While the circumstances of his life and legacy certainly play a role, this elusiveness may have as much to do with the variety of institutions that hold such materials and the differing standards and practices among libraries, museums, and archives.

The Eastman Museum will host a conversation about these challenges. The panelists are Jessica Lacher-Feldman, assistant dean, Special Collections and Preservation, University of Rochester; Jennifer Morris, archivist, Anacostia Community Museum, Washington, DC; and Heather Shannon, associate curator, Department of Photography, George Eastman Museum. Ken Fox, head of library and archives, Eastman Museum, will moderate. Join us as we set out to find Frederick Douglass.

Visit Rose Hill Mansion for Free on Museum Day

Rose Hill Mansion will open its doors free of charge to all Museum Day ticketholders on Saturday, September 22, 2018, as part of Smithsonian Magazine’s 14th annual Museum Day. On this day only, participating museums across the United States emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based facilities, which offer free admission every day, and open their doors for free to those who download a Museum Day ticket.

Inclusive by design, the event represents Smithsonian’s commitment to make learning and the spread of knowledge accessible to everyone. Last year’s event drew over 250,000 participants, and this year’s event is expected to attract more museum-goers than ever before.

The theme of this year's Museum Day is Women Making History, honoring women in society who are trailblazers in the arts, sciences, innovation, and culture, and emboldening others to be pioneers as well. You can explore this theme by learning about the women of Rose Hill Mansion in Geneva, New York.

Once a working farm, the house and surrounding grounds at Rose Hill are open seasonally for guided tours. Built in 1839, the elegant Greek Revival house was the center of a busy and productive farm at mid-century, occupied by the Swan family from 1850-1890. Twenty rooms of the house are restored and furnished in the Empire style, popular from the 1820s to 1850s. The property also has a wonderful view of Seneca Lake and nearby farmlands.

The Rose Hill Mansion Gift Shop is open whenever the house is open. The shop carries historically-inspired and locally made items, as well as souvenirs, history books, jewelry and home decorative items.

Rose Hill Mansion is located at 3373 Route 96A, about a mile south of Routes 5&20, near Geneva, New York. The house will be open on Museum Day Live from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last tour will be at 3:30 p.m.

Admission to Rose Hill is by guided tour only. The Museum Day ticket is available for download at Smithsonian.com/MuseumDay. Visitors who present the Museum Day ticket will gain free entrance for two on September 22, 2018. One ticket per household is permitted. Regular admission to Rose Hill is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $6 for children 10 to18. Children 9 and under are always free.

The Fine Wines of Northwest Seneca Wine Tour

Once each month during the prime season, E!FLX heads up to Geneva to explore some of the best wines along the northwestern shores of Seneca Lake. Join us on this special full-day tour where you will discover top producers, explore their commitment to process when making their fine wines, and taste the end result in your glass with custom-designed tastings created to show off the unique expression of each winery and quality being produced along this section of Seneca Lake.

We start our day at Anthony Road Wine Company.  John and Ann Martini moved to Anthony Road in 1973 “at the urging of a friend that touted the joys of grape growing in the Finger Lakes”.  Over 40 years later, the second generation has fully vested themselves in the continuation of the quality foundation laid by their parents.  Meet members of this winemaking family, visit their on-premise garden and taste their stellar wines created by winemaker Peter Becraft paired with specially-crafted, farm-sourced food selections.

Next, we head over to Bellangelo on North Seneca to enjoy an alfresco casual lunch out on their deck with a stunning view of Seneca Lake.  Each guest will be able to choose from the selection of Bellangelo’s finely crafted wines to enjoy with the picnic fare provided via The Belhurst dining team.

After lunch, we make our way to Billsboro Winery for a memorable tasting experience.   Enjoy a private tasting in the winery’s wine library featuring the beautifully distinctive wines of winemaker and owner Vinny Aliperti.  We will showcase two of his wines paired with delicious chocolates.  You may even have your tasting hosted by the chocolatier Cary Becraft who pours at Billsboro when she’s not making her amazing chocolates!

Our final stop of the day is Fox Run Vineyards.   Just as with the other stops on this tour, the wines of Fox Run Vineyards are recognized as some of the finest in the region.   Twenty-two years ago, owners Ruth and Scott Osborn, recognized the talent and skill of winemaker Peter Bell.   Since then, Peter has not only solidified the reputation of Fox Run for fine wine making, but has raised the entire bar of the region with his consulting skills and collaborative nature.  During the tasting, we will explore a carefully curated selection of Fox Run wines that demonstrates Peter’s quest for optimal expression, innovation and collaboration.

Price: $159.00 per person. This price includes the transportation, tasting fees, added services, lunch, and special food pairings. This tour is a public tour and requires a minimum of 5 total guests in order to run the tour at the listed price. Alternate touring options are available for tours that do not meet this minimum.

This tour is also available for groups of 5+ guests Sunday-Friday upon request. Please call 607-233-4818 if you are interested in this tour for your party.
