Festivals, Happy Hour, Live Music, Theatre, and More!

It doesn’t matter what your interests are or who you’re in the Finger Lakes with, you can always find a great event to enrich your time in the region with those you care about.

Events take place all year round in the Finger Lakes region. From lakeside (and on the lake) events in the summer to harvest activities in the fall, snowmobiling or snowshoeing in the winter, and festivals in the springtime! Step inside a glassmaker’s studio to blow your own glass, stroll Main Street on a food tour, or gather for live music and theater performances. Browse the list of Finger Lakes events below or search the specific dates you will be visiting to see everything going on in the region.

Great Events that Happen Every Year

Below, you will find dozens of great events happening throughout the year with many of them happening annually. If you have memories of favorite annual Finger Lakes events from childhood such as cardboard boat regattas, hot air balloon festivals, cheese, apple or pumpkin festivals, to name a few, it’s likely that event that still takes place or, has likely improved your enjoyment. If you see a special event that piques your interest but can’t make it, click on the event anyway, it might be coming back next year!

Threads of Light

Drive or walk by the Schweinfurth Art Center after dusk to see the installation

The Schweinfurth Art Center is participating in the International Day of Light with a new light installation that will be projected onto the second-floor windows of the art center. The installation will be visible 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. every night and can easily be seen in front of the center, located at 205 Genesee Street, Auburn.

The exhibit, titled “Threads of Light,” is a collaboration between Skaneateles artist Lorne Covington and contemporary textile artist Gerri Spilka. Covington, who creates interactive artwork and installations as Noirflux, manipulated images of Spilka’s large-scale art quilts by adding movement. The resulting work will be a changing textile of pattern and light.

The exhibition is part of “Light Windows,” a monthlong, world-wide exhibition by artists at home and art venues closed by the COVID-19 pandemic that was organized by The HoloCenter — Center for the Holographic Arts based in New York City. The HoloCenter planned “Light Windows” as an exhibition for neighbors, a thank you to essential workers, and a tribute to those who we have lost to COVID-19.

Portrait of Jennie webinar on June 4 hosted by Eastman Museum

The George Eastman Museum has announced it will host a virtual discussion on the film Portrait of Jennie (William Dieterle, 1948) on Thursday, June 4 at 1 p.m. with members of its Moving Image Department. The museum’s 6th Nitrate Picture Show was originally scheduled to kick off with a screening of Portrait of Jennie on June 4, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum made the decision to postpone the festival to June 3–6, 2021. In lieu of welcoming patrons to the Dryden Theatre next month, the museum is offering everyone a virtual experience to explore the film in a new way from home.

Portrait of Jennie (1948) is an average love story,  starring Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotton, directed by William Dieterle and produced by David O. Selznick. It claims its rarity in the final reel, as the black-and-white film moves to a final three-strip Technicolor shot and the aspect ratio changes to reveal a wider image on screen.

“For most of its running time, Portrait of Jennie is an eerie and unusual love story typical of the chances filmmakers were taking in 1940s black-and-white cinema. But in the last reel, it passes through three color processes (two of which were obsolete) and a change in aspect ratio that was unheard of at the time,” said Jared Case, curator of film exhibitions, George Eastman Museum. “When we initially screened David O. Selznick’s personal print of the film in 2015, we were able to re-create the Magnascope effect that was used for the original showings in New York, Boston, and Los Angeles, as the screen opens up to reveal a wider image in the final reel. Without the ability to screen it at this year’s festival, we wanted to offer patrons a chance to take a deeper dive into what makes this film so special.”

VIRTUAL: Portrait of Jennie: The Rarest Cinematic Experience of All Time

Thursday, June 4 at 1 p.m.

Register via Zoom
Through this free webinar, Curator of Film Exhibitions Jared Case, Preservation Manager Anthony L’Abbate, and Chief Projectionist Spencer Christiano will talk about the film, Portrait of Jennie (1948), its technical peculiarities, how they fit in with cinema history, and how those aspects are re-created in a modern cinema. Christiano will stream live from the Dryden Theatre projection booth to demonstrate the techniques used to exhibit the film in a manner consistent with the filmmaker's artistic vision. With no Nitrate Picture Show this year, tune in and enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at what might have been—and will be again! Registration is required as spaces are limited.

Support the George Eastman Museum
This is a critical time for museums across the globe. The George Eastman Museum encourages individuals to visit eastman.org/support, if you are able to contribute to the museum’s Annual Fund at this time. Donations of all amounts are appreciated. The unrestricted dollars that membership and annual fund gifts provide are essential to the museum's operations, and the exhibitions and public programs that bring our collections to life for our audiences. And as with all of our community's cultural organizations, these dollars have never been more critical.

About the George Eastman Museum
Founded in 1947, the George Eastman Museum is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the largest film archives in the United States, located on the historic Rochester estate of entrepreneur and philanthropist George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography. Its holdings comprise more than 450,000 photographs, 28,000 motion picture films, the world’s preeminent collection of photographic and cinematographic technology, one of the leading libraries of books related to photography and cinema, and extensive holdings of documents and other objects related to George Eastman. As a research and teaching institution, the Eastman Museum has an active publishing program and, through its two joint master’s degree programs with the University of Rochester, makes critical contributions to film preservation and to photographic preservation and collections management. For more information, visit eastman.org.

In post war Paris, romance is in the air and youthful optimism reigns. Gershwin’s soaring melodies are matched by gravity-defying dance as the world rediscovers the power of love in this breathtaking production. Hoping to start a new life, World War II veteran Jerry Mulligan chooses newly-liberated Paris as the place to make a name for himself as a painter. But Jerry’s life becomes complicated when he meets Lise, a young Parisian shop girl with her own secret – and realizes he is not her only suitor.  Winner of four Tony Awards and inspired by the Academy Award-winning film, this exquisite production features your favorite Gershwin songs including “I Got Rhythm,” “Liza,” “’S Wonderful,” “But Not for Me,” and “Stairway to Paradise.”

The resulting work will be a changing textile of pattern and light.

Schweinfurth Art Center with art installation on building

Spring Art Show and Sale

We at the arts center would like to give you an opportunity to express & share with others what you are going through now, what you are feeling about this time, and what your thoughts are on re-imagining life after the pandemic.  And so we’ve decided to go forward with an art show, opening on June 27, that we’re calling  --- Pandemic.  We’re hoping that you can use this time at home as an opportunity to capture your experience whether by a photograph, sculpture, drawing,  painting, poem or short story ….You choose the medium.

We plan to have the art show the end of June.  If by some chance we are actually open then, we’ll have it as a show at the Arts Center. But our plan now is to do a virtual show – where we post pictures of everyone’s work on-line. To do this you just need to  take a picture of your artwork, email it to us and we’ll put it in our virtual show on June 27. The show will run online for 2 weeks for all to see. We will plan to have a “regular” show whenever we do open,  at that time you can bring in your actual artwork for display.
