Altered
Fall Art Invitational Gala opening at the Conservatory - Altered

The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts (TCFA) is pleased to announce its 38th annual Fall Invitational, this year titled “ALTERED: Changed, Repurposed, Reconsidered.” Curated by Ann Welles, the exhibit features the work of six artists all of whom challenge us to experience the familiar in new ways. The show takes place from October 15 through November 20, with gallery hours Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 1-5pm

The Opening Gala is Saturday evening, October 15, from 7-9pm. This event is free and open to the public, with music by jazz pianist Alejandro Bernard-Papachryssanthou. Wine and light refreshments will be served.

Fueled by the notion that exposing us to new ideas reformulates what we already know, Ann Welles describes the genesis for the show as follows: “I was inspired by the building that houses the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts. Formerly a Baptist church, its past holds power and adds dimension to its current role in the community. I selected artists whose work can play off the building’s energy and whose practices tap into the power of the altered.”
The invited artists are:
* Julianna Dougherty, a digital-based artist who utilizes 3d modeling in both ceramic and plastic 3d printing.
* Ronald Gonzalez, a sculptor whose figurative works meld objects with human forms that address mortality, memory and psychic pain.
* Philip Kuznicki, a multi-media artist whose collages and assemblages make use of estate sale cast-offs that when reconfigured take on a decidedly surrealist quality.
* Natalija Mijatovic, a Serbian-American artist whose work poignantly examines humanity where change is the only constant.
* Gary Sczerbaniewicz, a 3d artist whose work seeks to disorient viewers through shifts in scale while combining post-Cold War imagery, cultural icons and architectural elements.
* Robin Whiteman, a sculptor known for her diminutive porcelain figures that merge religious iconography and myth — creating works that are both contemplative and potent.
A gallery talk with a participating artist will be held on Sunday, November 20 at 3pm. For more information visit TCFA.live

Pierre Bensusan at the Conservatory

Pierre Bensusan at the Conservatory
Wednesday, October 19, 7:30-9pm
Advance tickets $20, $25 at the door

Described by the L.A. Times as "one of the most unique and brilliant acoustic guitar veterans in the world music scene today", Pierre's name became synonymous with contemporary acoustic guitar genius, long before the terms New Age, New Acoustic Music or World Music were invented. He has the ability to make a single guitar sound like an entire band as he brings the audience on a mesmerizing musical journey. And yet, Bensusan is more than what any musician or music lover expects from a guitarist. He is a composer as well as a bilingual and a brave improvisational vocalist, melding whistles and resonant low notes with something like his own scat technique.

There is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work, an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. His "manner" of playing defies classification - crossing world, classical, jazz, traditional, folk and more. None can be isolated as simply “Brazilian”, "Arabic" or “French”; rather, they represent our world in its current state, a world sharing itself, fusing cultures together in ways we have never experienced. Not to be missed!

Octoberfest Volksmarch on the Keuka Outlet Trail

On Sunday, October 23, 2022, Keuka Outlet Trail and the new pavilion at Cascade Falls will host the first-ever in Yates County volksmarch in a collaborative walking event with the American Volkssport Association (AVA). Also known as America’s Walking Club, the AVA is a non-competitive sports organization committed to fun, fitness and friendship drawing on the German term “volkssport” which means “the sport of the people.” There are over 200 active AVA clubs nationwide and more than 2,500 volkssports activities each year. Participates set their own pace be it walking, biking, swimming, canoeing, or snow sports such as cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.
Participants of Yates County inaugural Octoberfest Volksmarch will begin gathering for a 5K or 10K walk at 10:00am with the goal of finishing by 1:00pm. Walkers, hikers, bikers, supporters and friends seeking a fun afternoon on the KOT will begin gathering at the Cascade Pavilion for the German-themed Octoberfest that runs from 12 noon – 3:00pm. The Apple Strudel Gang will take the stage providing live music with an ‘omm pah pah’ beat, and there will be plenty of beer, wine, bratwursts plus an assortment of other refreshments.
“This new Octoberfest brings together the people and purpose of two terrific organizations that will equally benefit from knowing about each other,” Robert Schwarting, an AVA member and also a FOTO board member. “AVA is a great group of folks who love being active outdoors and I’m excited about introducing some existing members to our amazing Keuka Outlet Trail, as well as all the incredible amenities we know and love in Yates County. Local people who appreciate outdoor fun with fitness while making new friends should consider joining our Volksmarch on October 23.”

Learn about Early Barns, Farmhouses & Agricultural Structures on October 27

Learn about Early Barns, Farmhouses & Agricultural Structures on October 27

Learn about “Early Barns, Farmhouses & Agricultural Structures” on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022 at 7:00 pm at the Geneva History Museum, 543 S. Main Street, Geneva. The program is presented by the Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes and is free and open to the public.

This is an in-person program only and will not be available virtually.

The program by Carol S. Bailey covers the evolution of barns in the Town of Lyons from English threshing barns to modern dairy and current pole barns. The early rude structures are far removed from the sleek pole barns that dominate new farm structures today.

Carol also addresses such topics as why barns are red and other agricultural structures found in the rural area. She will also discuss styles of farmhouses from federal to bungalow styles.

Her talk will cover the reasons for the demise of barns and the need for preservation. She will show slides taken in 1997 while she was the historian for the Town of Lyons. “These cathedrals of the land and their accompanying manses which are fading from the landscape are preserved in these photos.”

The Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes is in its 48th year of programming. Meetings are free and open to the public, but membership is welcome and encouraged at $10 per year. Programs include meetings at the Geneva History Museum, field trips, and social events. See our Facebook page for more news.
