Cayuga Lake Wine Trail delves into one of the oldest-known grape varieties

Apr 07th, 2021

The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail (CLWT) launched a “Wine of the Month Series” campaign in 2020 to showcase the different wines the region excels in. Each month, participating Cayuga Lake Wine Trail member wineries feature a different vinifera wine ranging from Cabernet Franc to Riesling and even showcasing the complexities of Sparkling Wine.

In previous months, the participating member wineries explored Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and the world of Sauvignon. Continuing this trend, the participating member wineries are showing off their various Pinots! The CLWT website features descriptions on both varieties of Pinot that can be found here on Cayuga Lake, as well as food pairing tips and recipe suggestions. The website also lists the different offers and promotions you can find at the participating wineries throughout the entire month of April. “Next on our schedule is Pinot- both Noir and Gris.” begins Katherine Chase, CLWT Executive Director. “Pinot Noir is a tricky grape to grow, though it loves our cooler climate. With careful vineyard management, this produces a fantastic light-bodied red. And in fact- it’s the world’s most popular. Over the centuries of its existence, it naturally mutated and created Pinot Gris which is known for its refreshing citrus flavor and zesty acidity. This promotion is a wonderful time to visit the wineries and compare these 2 pinots. But there’s actually a third! Pinot Grigio uses the same grape as Pinot Gris but is made with a different style of winemaking. Can you taste a difference while you’re out and about?”

Participating wineries this month are Montezuma Winery, Swedish Hill Winery, Knapp Winery, Goose Watch Winery, Buttonwood Grove Winery, Toro Run Winery, Thirsty Owl Wine Co., Hosmer Winery, Americana Vineyards, and Long Point Winery.

The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail wineries are safe and remain in compliance with the various state rules and regulations. Those still open and offering tastings are seated, snacks are served with the tastings or flights, and additional cleaning routines have been set in place.
