Downtown Auburn BID May 2023 Events

May 05th, 2023

Welcome to Auburn DRI Mural Unveiling Friday, May 19 @ 11:30AM

Arthur the Artist’s design for the “Welcome to Auburn,” mural installed above Nash’s Framing & Art celebrates Auburn’s landmarks using a vintage postcard style that compliments its historic surroundings while projecting a fresh modern look. It was created in collaboration with the building owners Kim & Jay Pearson and community members who put forth ideas and inspiration. The lively design uses big letters, bright colors, and bold movements to show residents and visitors that Auburn is a proud city that values its legacy while looking to the future.

This Downtown Auburn BID mural was prepared with funding provided by the New York State Department of State funded by the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The mural printing and installation were performed by A&M Graphics. This mural replaces a floral landscape mural that was designed by Peter Maciulewicz, installed by Mack Studios, and funded by the BID over 10 years ago.

AUBURN Letter Images

The image featured in the A is the Hoopes Park gazebo that was commissioned by the Karpinsky family. It is a popular destination for prom & wedding photos. The public city park features flower gardens, walking paths, fountains, and ponds, and offers summer concerts, movies, and many annual community events.

The image featured in the first U is the channel where Owasco River connects to Owasco Lake at Emerson Park. Auburn’s finger lake county public park offers the REV Theatre Co. musicals, a disc golf course, swimming beach, boating, a playground, the historic pavilion, Deauville Island, summer concerts, car shows, and many annual community events. The second U image is the infamous and nostalgic rocket slide that once graced the park playground, yet was later dismantled for safety.

The image featured in the B is Logan Monument in Fort Hill Cemetery. Built in 1852, an obelisk of native stone, fifty-six feet in height, it was erected in memory of Tah-gah-jute, or Logan, the celebrated Chief of the Cayugas, a tribe of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. This historic cemetery also boasts the burial sites of Harriet Tubman, the Seward family, Theodore Case, Martha Coffin Wright, Auburn founder Col. John L. Hardenbergh and many other historical figures.

The image featured in the R is Willard Memorial Chapel, knows as the “Tiffany Treasure of the Finger Lakes.” This unaltered interior was designed by Tiffany Glass & Decorating Co. and the venue hosts weddings, concerts, and special events. It is also the headquarters of the Community Preservation Committee. Special features include stained glass windows, chandeliers, mosaic tile flooring, and gilt bronze memorial tablets. The Willard sisters commissioned the chapel to be constructed in the early 1890s as part of Auburn Theological Seminary.

The image featured in the N is Falcon Park, the home of Auburn Doubledays collegiate summer baseball league. The park also hosts concerts, sports tournaments, and special events. The team’s mascot is named after Abner Doubleday, who is often credited for developing the first scheme of playing baseball. Abner was an accomplished American Civil War veteran, who hailed from the Cooperstown area.
