Elmira to try for World’s Largest Human Shamrock record a second time

Feb 24th, 2020

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) — Last year, the City of Elmira tried to break the Guinness World Record for the largest human shamrock. Even though more than 1,000 participated, the attempt fell short — so, the city is trying again.

Monday, Jennifer Herrick with Elmira Downtown Development, Inc. announced the second attempt at the World’s Largest Human Shamrock will be on March 15 at 1 p.m. at the Eldridge Park baseball fields.

As WENY News reported, Elmira had the numbers to break the record last year — 1,200 participants took part; however, Guinness said because there were gaps between people making up the shamrock, the record wouldn’t go to Elmira.

What’s different this year is that two other communities in the United States will be competing for the same record. Because of this, officials don’t want to reveal the number of participants they want to try and reach just yet.

Herrick says the attempt is for more than the award, though.

"I think it's just community pride. There's so much going on in the city of Elmira now, and this is just a way to garner that constant community pride that we have for the city and the county, and St. Patrick’s day is a day where everybody is Irish in Elmira so it's a day of celebration."

Herrick says more information about the world record attempt will be revealed soon.
