FLCC news: Upcoming events at ArtSpace36, $177K in scholarships

Preview of ArtSpace36

ArtSpace36 is FLCC's gallery in downtown Canandaigua at 36 S. Main St. It is the next door to the site of FLCC's first art classes, held at 34 S. Main St. when the college opened in city storefronts in 1968. The gallery is closed for winter break. Regular hours resume on Jan. 27: Thursday through Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m.

Essence: Cocoa Rae David

 

This collection of work by Rochester visual artist and photographer Cocoa Rae David opens on Thursday, Feb. 17, and runs through Saturday, April 2.

 

She is a graduate of Monroe Community College and the Art Institute of Charleston. She provided the cover photography for a poetry book by FLCC alumnus Lester Mayers ’16 called “African Booty-Scratcha.”

 

The opening reception is Thursday, Feb. 24, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. It opens with an artist talk, which will be streamed online at artspace36.com. A limited number of free tickets are available to attend in-person.

Artist Talk with John Verney

 

Visual artist John Verney will give an online talk on Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. as part of FLCC’s Laker Day. As part of this FLCC tradition, the college does not schedule regular classes one day each semester to allow for field trips, community service, and other enrichment experiences.

 

Verney has a master’s of fine arts from the Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan and has participated in solo and group exhibitions since 2014. He seeks out old photos by amateur photographers and combines them with abstract colors and shapes to create a new image. A link to his talk will be available on the ArtSpace36 website.

Student Portfolio Show

 

The spring Student Portfolio Show at ArtSpace36 runs from Thursday, April 14 to Saturday, April 30 with an opening reception on the first day from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. A limited number of free tickets will be available on the gallery website.

 

Art Talk with Mary Delmastro

Mary Delmastro, assistant professor of art history, will give an online talk called “Looking at Faces: A Discussion of Portraits from King Tut to the Selfie” on Thursday, April 28, at 6 p.m. The link to join in real time will be available on the gallery website.

 

Create + Connect

 

ArtSpace36 also hosts the Community Support Center’s Create and Connect Series, which gives local residents an opportunity to create their own art. New grant, tools for

manufacturing training

A new source of grant funds has made it possible for FLCC to offer its certified manufacturing training program free of charge to anyone 18 or older.

The course meets Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. with a lab one Saturday per month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Labs include experience with virtual reality visors to provide scenarios of real-world manufacturing settings.

 

The course is open to those 18 and over looking to enter the manufacturing field, which can provide stable employment, benefits and opportunity for advancement.

Vintners and Valentines menu

The menu is set for the 7th annual Vintners & Valentines winemakers dinner March 18 at 6 p.m.

 

Reservations are now open; seating is limited to the first 150 people due to the pandemic.

 

Soup Course:

Roasted Cauliflower Soup

Cauliflower and other winter vegetables roasted and pureed in a flavorful vegetable stock; finished with a hint of cream.

First Course:

Curried Sea Scallops

Curry spiced seared sea scallops with baby bok choy and daikon salad.

Salad Course:

Intermezzo Green Salad

Crisp baby greens, cucumbers, and grape tomatoes dressed with our own cider vinaigrette.

Entrée Course:

Braised Short Ribs

Braised beef short rib with cipollini onions and forest mushrooms with horseradish mashed potato and vegetable medley.

Dessert Course:

Caramel Panna Cotta Trifle

Caramel panna cotta with pistachios and strawberries atop peach ricotta cake with strawberry coulis and whipped cream.

 

Special dietary needs can be accommodated with notice at the time of ticket purchase.

 

Tickets are $150 per person for the reception, dinner and live auction. In-person guests may take part in an optional curated tasting at 5:30 p.m. for an additional $30.

 

An online option is also available for $100 per person and includes two bottles of wine delivered to your home, live discussion with winemakers and the ability to participate in the auction.

$177K in scholarships

The Finger Lakes Community College Foundation awarded 139 students a total of $177,680 in scholarships funded by local families, business and organizations during 2021.

 

The Foundation manages more than 100 scholarship funds. Amounts vary from $400 to one-year of tuition, currently $4,968.
