George Eastman House Kicks off Holiday Season with Sweet Creations Gingerbread House Display on November 13

Rochester, N.Y., November 5, 2013 - Join us at George Eastman House, your home for the holidays, for the 18th annual Sweet Creations gingerbread house display, a roster of holiday films, Holiday Homecoming celebration with Santa, and tabletop tree and wreath displays. The historic house will be elaborately decorated.

 

Holiday Decorations

The National Historic Landmark home of George Eastman will be decorated for the season in turn-of-the-20th-century holiday style from mid-November through New Year's Day. Decorations include elaborately adorned grand staircase and fireplace mantels; a plethora of poinsettias; the formal dining room decorated for Christmas dinner; and decorated trees in each room, including an old-fashioned tree encircled by an antique toy train in the Living Room.

 

Sweet Creations: Gingerbread House Display

George Eastman House invites young and old to enjoy a feast for the eyes and nose-a display of more than 60 cleverly designed and decorated gingerbread houses. The Eastman House Council's annual gingerbread house exhibition, Sweet Creations, will be on view Wednesday, November 13 through Wednesday, December 17. This display has become a favorite holiday tradition for families across New York State. The gingerbread creations are produced by professional bakers, hobbyists, scout troops, families, and schools and community groups. The gingerbread creations will be sold via silent auction, with proceeds benefiting future restoration projects at Eastman House. Sweet Creations, which is included with museum admission, is sponsored by Tasteful Connections Catering and Tops Markets.    

 

Tabletop Tree Display

Nearly 20 trees decorated in various themes by local groups and businesses will be on display throughout the historic house. The trees will be available for purchase via silent auction, with proceeds benefiting fresh flower arrangements in the historic house throughout the year. The trees will be on view Tuesday, November 19 through Wednesday, December 18. The Tabletop Tree display is included with museum admission.

 

Holiday Wreath Display

Eastman House's annual holiday wreath display and auc­tion will be on view through Sunday, December 1. This year's selection features more than 25 wreaths created and donated by florists, garden clubs, and businesses, available for sale via silent auction. The holiday wreath display and auction is organized by the Eastman House Council and is included with museum admission.

 

Holiday Homecoming Celebration

Savor the seasonal spirit at George Eastman House's annual Holiday Homecoming celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 12. The event includes holiday decorations and displays, live music, refreshments, and holiday coloring activities, plus a visit from Santa Claus, who will pose for special photos in the decorated Living Room (bring your camera). Included with museum admission, $3 for children ages 5-12.

 

Holiday Films in the Dryden Theatre

The roster of holiday films include Bad Santa (Dec. 6 and 8), A Christmas Story (Dec. 13 and 15),and It's A Wonderful Life (Dec. 21 and 22). Visit dryden.eastmanhouse.org for the full list. Regular Dryden admission: $8 adults/$6 children and students.  

 

New Year's Eve Dinner and Double Feature at the Dryden Theatre

Celebrate the New Year with a special dinner and double feature on New Year's Eve, Monday, Dec. 31. Enjoy a special dinner in the Eastman House Café before the double feature-Gremlins (1984) and Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990). First film starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include dinner, beverage, dessert, and admission to both screenings. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling (585) 271-3361 ext. 223.
