Rochester, N.Y., July 18, 2019—This Saturday, July 20, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, and the George Eastman Museum will be celebrating “Moon Day” throughout the day with a special boot camp style photo workshop, a Focus 45 talk, gallery tours, and film screenings. In addition, visitors are encouraged to visit the moon inspired rotation in the History of Photography Gallery which examines the intersecting histories of photography and space exploration, as well as a new installation by artist Penelope Umbrico, Everyone’s Photos Any License that will be in view in the museum’s Potter Peristyle.

9 a.m.–12 p.m. BOOT CAMP WORKSHOP
Lunar-Inspired Lumen Prints with Artist Sean McFarland
Take a private tour of the History of Photography Gallery, then, artist Sean McFarland will teach participants how to create lunar-inspired photographs using the Lumen printing process. There is still limited availability in the workshop; tickets are $50, $40 for museum members, and $20 for students. Register in advance at eastman.org/workshops.
12 p.m. FOCUS 45 TALK
The Lunar Orbiter Project: Mapping the Moon for the Apollo Program, by Art Cosgrove
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, retired Eastman Kodak electronics engineer and scientist Arthur Cosgrove will discuss his involvement with the Lunar Orbiter Project in 1966 and 1967. That project paved the way for the success of the Apollo 11 mission through mapping the lunar surface. Tickets are included with museum admission, or to attend the talk only is $6, $3 for students.

Join us for a special screening of 16mm film prints from the museum’s collection in the Curtis Theatre, that feature footage from NASA of the Lunar Orbiter, Apollo 11, and Apollo 16 missions. Total running time: 65 min. Included with museum admission.

The Umbrico installation, Everyone's Photos Any License will open this weekend at the museum and remain on view through the end of the year. Operating at the intersection of photography and the internet, Umbrico creates art that taps into humanity’s perpetual fascination with familiar, even cliché, subjects. Her Everyone's Photos Any License, for example, takes images of the full moon posted to Flickr as its starting point. Umbrico contacted individuals who posted their moon pictures to Flickr with a Rights Reserved license, requesting permission to include their images in this work. If a photographer denied her request, she selected replacements licensed for Creative Commons use.
The Eastman Museum installation of Everyone's Photos Any License consists of 532 of the 1,190,505 photographs she found, along with a diagram and key providing relevant information about each photograph (photographer, description, terms of use license, and file data format). The exhibition is made possible by Stephen B. and Janice G. Ashley, the Max and Marian Farash Charitable Foundation, Susan and Nathan Robfogel, and Deborah Ronnen.
