GUTHRIE WINEGLASS MARATHON DONATES MORE THAN $82,000 TO LOCAL NON-PROFITS

Dec 17th, 2021

A top destination race and the second largest marathon in New York State, Wineglass Race Series is about more than just running. It is also about giving back to the communities in which the race runs.
The success of this year’s races is the result of the title sponsorship support from Guthrie (full marathon) and Wegmans (half marathon) and the nearly 2,000 volunteers who are responsible for everything from water stations to the finish line to course safety. Proceeds from the race are channeled back to those volunteer groups who assist with the races with Wineglass organizers donating over $82,000 to more than 50 non-profit groups this year.
“After a year of virtual racing in 2020, we were thrilled to return to in person racing in 2021,” said Sheila Sutton, Race Director. “Our community of volunteers went above and beyond as we returned to in person racing,“ said Sutton.
This year’s volunteer groups seventeen water stations along the route staffed by teams from Elmira College, Campbell-Savona High School, Corning-Painted Post High School, area churches, and the Alternative School for Math & Science, among many others. Donations also go to volunteer fire departments, Bath Rotary, Elmira Kiwanis, the Gaffer District, and Corning Christian Academy, along with other groups who play vital roles throughout the weekend.
The Wineglass also offers six $1,000 scholarships to student-athletes in the three high schools along the marathon route (Bath-Haverling, Campbell-Savona, and Corning-Painted Post). A portion of these scholarships is funded voluntarily by runners during registration to help inspire the next generation of running enthusiasts.
Since 2011 when the Board adopted the donation policy, nearly $700,000 has been donated to area groups by Wineglass. Chris Sharkey, president of the Wineglass Board of Directors, said, “In a year when many races were forced to cancel due to lack of volunteers, we are happy to recognize our very special community with these donations.”
