A Monumental Celebration at MAG

Feb 27th, 2023

Mark your calendar! MAG’s Centennial Sculpture Park (CSP) ribbon cutting and celebration event will be on June 4. The completion of Phase II of the Sculpture Park will enliven the museum grounds near the corner of University Avenue and Prince Street, with newly acquired sculptures, as well as pathways, gardens and seating. This two‐acre park will become an iconic visual and physical gateway, connecting MAG with School of the Arts (SOTA) and the Visual Studies Workshop.

The project continues the work that began in 2013 when MAG marked its 100th anniversary with Phase I of CSP. The museum removed the iron fence surrounding that area of the grounds to make this urban oasis more accessible to the Rochester community. The Sculpture Park is now a gathering place, hosting live music at the annual M&T Clothesline Festival, dance performances for Celebration Days, outdoor yoga classes and MAG Summer Camp activities.

Phase II of Centennial Sculpture Park will include seven major works by influential contemporary artists:

Rashid Johnson (American, born 1977)   Mosaic Sculpture Pavilion, 2022

Pia Camil (Mexican, born 1980) Lover's Rainbow, 2022

Sanford Biggers (American, born 1970) Oracle, 2022 Jun Kaneko (American, born Japan, 1942) Untitled, Dango, 2017

Nathan Mabry (American, born 1978) Process Art (An Eye for An Eye), 2008

Deborah Butterfield (American, born 1949) Untitled, 1996

Tony Cragg (English, born 1949) Versus, 2013

In the spirit of inspiring fun, which is fundamental to MAG’s mission, these works of art are playful, flexible, smart, and provocative. Another equally important priority for the museum is to showcase important artists from underrepresented backgrounds with robust international reputations.

The Biggers and Camil sculptures are in place on museum grounds. The installation of the remaining sculptures and landscaping will be completed throughout the spring months.
