Gorge Trail to Open
Memorial Day Weekend
|
|
The gorge trail will open by Memorial Day weekend, but visitors may need to use other points of entry until a temporary bridge is installed. A recently completed inspection of the pedestrian bridge near the Franklin Street entrance found that significant erosion of the native stone has compromised the integrity of bridge abutments at both ends of the 1930s era bridge, known as the Sentry Bridge. New York State Parks is proceeding with engineering and design to repair or replace the bridge. The timeline of the bridge renovation has not been determined, but again, the gorge trail will open as usual.
To accommodate access to the gorge, New York State Parks will install a temporary 56-foot-wide aluminum truss bridge that will lay over the existing stone arch bridge. The temporary bridge will rest on new abutments. It is expected to be in place by early summer. Until then, visitors will need to use the Upper Entrance or the North or South Rim Trails to access lower portions of the Gorge Trail. Signage will be in place at the park to direct visitors.
Currently, the North and South Rim Trails are open. As mentioned, the gorge trail is expected to open Memorial Day Weekend. A shuttle will run on weekends from Memorial Day Weekend through July 1. After that, the shuttle will run daily. Rides on the shuttle cost $6 per person.

A representative from the Finger Lakes Regional Tourism Council's public relations firm will be visiting Schuyler County the afternoon of May 18 to familiarize herself with our community. She has a busy afternoon, with activities scheduled until 9:00pm! We would like to present her with a welcome basket filled with items that represent our member businesses. The representative has connections with many top-tier and niche media outlets. The basket will include the Travel Guide. If you have a product you would like to share, please bring it to the Downtown Visitor Center by May 16, 2022. We will make sure to include it in the basket on your behalf!
