Spring Trail Maintenance

Spring trail maintenance time is here! Below is a checklist to help you get on top of these spring season tasks:

  • Clear all trail blockages. Request sawyer help for larger trees!
  • Trim all brush
  • Pick up litter
  • Replace missing signs
  • Do whatever blazing is needed (check in both directions)
  • Remove debris or note what needs to be done from water bars/swells, steps/bridges, and benching

Request help from your RTC as needed. Report any issues to the RTC regarding steps/bridges or other structures that are beyond your simple fix, and notify your RTC or any any areas where improved water control or benching would be beneficial. This will help us identify where more detailed assessment may be needed and/or to plan for the work!

The Roving Trail Crew may be available to assist for more significant work. Additional training or training workshops on trail maintenance techniques/design can be provided. Please email John Schmitt, VP of Trail Maintenance at John.Schmitt@fingerlakestrail.org for more details.

Wanted- New Regional Trail Coordinator (RTC)

Long-time RTC Peter Wybron has announced that he plans to retire by the end of 2023. As we bid him farewell and good luck on his next adventure, we have begun searching for a new RTC who can receive training from Peter prior to his retirement. This region includes Maps M7 (Genesee River) through Map 11 (West of Bath). This is a voluntary position and the region may be split.

The duties of this RTC (with the help of the VP of Trail Maintenance and others) include:

  • Primary duty: Identifying and training maintainers/sponsors for all sections within the region.
  • "Inspect" for trail quality. Advise and work with maintainers/sponsors on problems or if there are complaints.
  • Advocate for maintainer/sponsor proposed larger project as appropriate.
  • Promote healthy landowner relations.
  • Serve as the frontline contact with the regional DEC and other public agencies.
  • Work with the Mapping Committee for map questions, adjustments, and revisions
  • Submit Trail Notices for problems and changes.

Training will be provided to the new RTC by the current RTC, VP of Trail Maintenance, and others.

Are you interested in applying for this opportunity, or just want to learn more? Please contact John Schmitt, VP of trail Maintenance, at John.Schmitt@fingerlakestrail.org.

Each year, the FLTC offers a series of hikes across a different county along the trail. Completed year after year, the County Hike Series will eventually lead hikers over about 584 miles of trail to complete an end-to-end hike of the main Finger Lakes Trail. This year we are excited to be moving across the beautiful and scenic Schuyler County!

The County Hike Series is one of the FLTC’s most popular hiking events, and there truly is an option for everyone. Whether you are a trail runner or like to stop and smell the flowers, there's a group to fit your desired pace!

The longest hike is approximately 11.2 miles and the shortest is approximately 6.1 miles. The Series concludes during the FLTC’s Fall Weekend Festival at the Schuyler County Event Center in Watkins Glen. Hikes are scheduled for the third Saturday of each month, and this year's series will kick off on May 20th.

For more details, registration, pricing, participation options, and more, please visit the 2023 County Hike Series webpage on the FLTC Website!
