Don't miss this chance to connect with some of the vibrant artistic community here in Tompkins county in an evening filled with conversation, culture, and creativity.

This show focuses on celebrating the natural world found here in New York State. All of the animals are local to the area, from ones you could potentially find in your own backyard like the Cedar Waxwing or Eastern Cottontail Rabbit, to more elusive wildlife, such as the Wood Duck or Gray Wolf. It also features three new pieces in her ongoing New York State collection series including New York Wildflowers, Fish, and of course, Fossils!

About the Artist:

Marika Chew creates watercolors of pattern-filled animals and plants. She grew up in Ithaca New York and returned to the region after receiving a BFA in Illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art. World textile designs, folk art, and Art Nouveau motifs are the primary influences on her work. She likes to let the personality of each animal determine the patterns used in the paintings - choosing bold florals for a bird’s plumage or lace and embroidery designs for an insect’s wing. Each of her pieces starts as a detailed pencil sketch and her watercolors are the result of many layers of paint, working from the large shapes to the final pattern-work and outlines using a number of very tiny brushes.More of Marika’s work can be found on her website: marikachew.com or on Instagram @marika_chew.

No cost to the reception, visitors can pay regular admission to visit the rest of the Museum.
