The George Eastman Museum Celebrates 90 Years of the Academy Awards

Jan 23rd, 2018

Rochester, N.Y., January 23, 2018—The George Eastman Museum will be celebrating the 90th Academy Awards with a 23-film series at the Dryden through April, a special event with Jack Garner on February 16 discussing his award winner predictions, and a day of past Best Picture winners screening at Kodak Center on March 3.

90 Years of Academy Awards Film Series
In 1929, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented the 1st Academy Awards, a ceremony that quickly grew to become the global standard for measuring artistic and technical excellence in film industry. To honor the 90th award ceremony, the Dryden Theatre is presenting a series of 23 titles spread over seven decades, all 35mm film prints from the museum’s own collection, and all winners of at least three and up to eleven different Academy Awards. The series, which began at the beginning of the year, ranges from Cimarron (1931), the fourth ever Best Picture and one of the very few westerns to win that top Oscar, to Schindler’s List (1993), Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece and arguably one of Academy’s finest moments in recent history. Academy Awards Preview with Jack Garner
Democrat and Chronicle entertainment columnist Jack Garner will offer his take on the 2018 Academy Award nominations and predict the winners in the major categories on Friday, February 16, at 6 p.m. in the Dryden Theatre at the George Eastman Museum. Tickets for the Academy Awards Preview event in the Dryden are $10 general admission, $7 museum members, $5 students (with ID).

For those interested in keeping the discussion going, a premium ticket is available for $40, which includes dinner with wine in the museum’s Potter Peristyle following the talk, with Garner in attendance. For reservations and more information, call (585) 327-4888. Reservations for dinner must be made by February 9. The event is presented by the Eastman Museum Council, and all proceeds will benefit the George Eastman Museum.

Honoring 90 Years of the Academy Awards at The Kodak Center
On Saturday, March 3, Kodak will be screening two Oscar-winning films in 35mm at the Kodak Center Theater at 200 West Ridge Road.

11 a.m. - The Bridge on the River Kwai (David Lean, UK/US 1957)
3 p.m. - Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis, US 1994)

Tickets for the screenings are available at eastman.org/AAwards and are $10 for general admission and $7 for George Eastman Museum members, for each film. All proceeds benefit the George Eastman Museum.
