Fishing & Hunting

Fishing in the Finger Lakes

Start with 11 pristine Finger Lakes and the nearly 134,000 acres of water. Add Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake and many smaller lakes and ponds along with a host of rivers and streams and you have countless opportunities to pursue your favorite fish. Finger Lakes fishing is truly world-class – there is no place in the entire world that produces consistent trophy-sized trout, salmon, bass, walleye, pike, carp and catfish.

This fishing Mecca can be enjoyed during all four seasons. From winter steelhead stream fishing to summer king salmon; from fishing on the ice to pond fishing in Finger Lakes National Forest, New York’s Finger Lakes should be every angler’s destination. Whether you prefer the complexities of downrigger fishing from a boat, or simply casting a worm from shore, we have all options available to you!

Make a commitment, pick a date and we’ll provide the fish! Each year, the last full weekend in June is designated as Free Fishing Days throughout New York State – no license is required to fish the waters of the Empire State. It’s a great opportunity to introduce newcomers to great fishing in the Finger Lakes region.

Fishing for bass is a fun and regular activity here in the Finger Lakes region! Bass is one of the more popular fish to cast for, not only because they are typically large and therefore make the perfect prize photo, but because they also taste delicious. Bass can be found in lakes and rivers, making them ideal prey for fishers who are using kayaks. Best Hunting in New York

Consider the one-quarter of a million acres of public hunting lands in 118 locations throughout a largely rural region containing many heavily forested areas, fields, meadows, and wetlands. Ranging in size from 16,000 acres in the Finger Lakes National Forest to 32 acres in the Cross Lake Wildlife Management Area, these lands provide hunters with many options. Hunters can pursue trophy whitetail deer, many of world-class rank, in virtually any locale in the region in October, November and December. You many even have an opportunity to bag a black bear in Steuben, Chemung or Schuyler counties.

Waterfowl can be found in any of the abundant wetlands near Lake Ontario or elsewhere in the region. Hunting for wild turkey has become a very popular addition for outdoor sporting enthusiasts, and the region’s rural habitats have seen this magnificent game bird thrive, as the populations remain healthy year after year.

The majority of the public hunting acres or New York State Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) are located along the Lake Ontario shoreline, which lies within the Atlantic Flyway. Waterfowlers have the opportunity to hunt migratory species as they make their annual flights. The open waters of Lake Ontario flourish with mergansers, buffleheads, and goldeneyes. The calmer bays have abundant populations of teals, mallards, black ducks, and pintails. The habitat is here and offers a selection of accommodations, restaurants, gun shops, and professional taxidermists who can make your hunting experiences last forever.

With so many options of which water to fish and which land to hunt, plan your next trip to New York's Finger Lakes now. You may be the next lucky sportsman or sportswoman to bag that lunker trout or monster buck of a lifetime!
