Music for the Soul
Ever notice how music can change your mood?
How you don't just hear the sounds, but feel them, too? From the physical vibrations that move through your body to the way some lyrics can touch your soul.
Music is a very personal experience. Yet it can also be one of the most remarkable things to share with others. Especially a live performance.
In recent years, Steuben County has not so quietly been establishing itself as a great place to find and experience music. During summer and fall, in particular, you can enjoy an abundance of live musical performances happening throughout the county.
From Grammy-winners and international sensations in concert at grand venues to local artists and regional favorites playing smaller gigs at craft breweries and wineries.
From free summertime music in the park to more formal orchestral performances. From fiddle players reimagining the tunes of Southern Appalachia at Farm Markets and events like Days of Incandescence to the elegant string sounds of chamber music at world-class museums
From annual ethnic events featuring the traditional music and dance of various cultures ranging from Native Nations to India, as well as live performances supported by the local ARTS Council.
Hammondsport, Bath, Corning and Hornell all have free Summer concert series thanks to their respective Chambers of Commerce and organizations like Corning’s Gaffer District and Hornell Partners for Growth. Most happen during the week (Wednesdays and Thursdays) which compliment the efforts of local wineries, distilleries and breweries that often have music and food trucks on the weekends.
Several of Steuben’s small towns are big on music with venues offerings exciting concerts such as Moe-Town in Woodhull and The ForX in Wayland.
While wineries like Savor Vineyards and Wine in Arkport have built a following as the place to go for live music every weekend. Others, like Point of the Bluff Vineyards, have a robust music calendar featuring award-winning artists from the past and present.
“There’s no better way to take advantage of the Rochester-area summer than with a glass of FLX wine and some of the region’s finest musicians. . . . Point of the Bluff Vineyards in Hammondsport for an evening of dancing and imbibing.” — Emmarae Stein, Rochester City Newspaper
Some Steuben organizations exist for the love of music. One such entity, the Corning Painted Post Civic Music Association has been sharing that passion for nearly 100 years, presenting an “eclectic mix of musical performances ranging from classical and jazz to gospel, swing, and rock in an affordable concert series.”
Not far from Corning, you’ll find another popular music venue, Tags Summer Stage, while the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes performs at a variety of locations from world-renowned Corning Museum of Glass to the Clemens Center in Elmira.
In Steuben, we get how important music can be in our lives. How it can make you feel understood. Or less alone. Or simply at home in your own skin. How some songs seem like they were written just for you. How they can connect you to memories, to emotions, to yourself, and to each other.
