John Gurche will tell the story of how we came to know the most ancient australopithecine and how he rebuilt its face. This hominin lived from 4.2 to 3.8 million years ago, and is the likely ancestor of the famous Lucy, and of ourselves.

John Gurche is Artist-in-Residence at the Paleontological Research Institution, and one of the world’s leading paleoartists, especially of early hominins (the group including humans and their close fossil relatives). His restorations of ancient life have appeared in Natural History magazine, Scientific American, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the Field Museum in Chicago.
