Brenna O’Toole is a pastel painter and calligrapher who lives and works in Ithaca, New York. She is inspired by the natural world, and she seeks to capture ephemeral moments of beauty in her paintings.

Brenna’s primary focus is landscapes; she loves to explore the world around her through art. Reflections on water, the interplay between light and shadow, the ever-changing sky — all of these are deep wells of inspiration, and she never tires of them. Brenna has a strong affinity for soft pastels. Expressing the shapes created by light feels natural with the medium, and it is always a joy to discover the right colors for each piece.

Brenna lives with her husband, Al, and they enjoy hiking and spending time outdoors. Almost all of her reference material comes from hikes or walks they’ve taken together. She grew up in Webster, New York, received a BA in Studio Art, and lived in Ithaca for a short time before moving downstate. Her paintings have been shown in several galleries and venues across the state, from the Adirondacks to the Hudson Valley, where she lived until 2020 upended the world. She is amazed and grateful to be back in the Finger Lakes.

• This event is structured like our pre-2020 events:
  • Select a specific starting winery for you and your friends to start at. (This is where you’ll receive your souvenir wine glass and first potted herb or vegetable plant!)
  • Travel the trail as you please after your first stop, collecting potted herbs or vegetable plants as you go.
  • The ticket is good for BOTH days, so feel free to spread the wineries out over both days or come on just Saturday or just Sunday. (Pro-tip: Sunday tends to be a lighter day, so the wineries won’t be as crowded, which makes for an excellent time to visit and get more one-on-one attention with less waiting.)
• Groups are limited to 12.
• Expect diversity. Some wineries will be offering the standard bar tasting while others will be offering a sit-down experience that may take longer. Take your time during the day and enjoy both!

Herbs this year are hot pepper, cilantro, dill, oregano, tomato, parsley, cauliflower, sweet pepper, basil, and Cabbage.

Tickets:

Each ticket is good for the whole weekend to visit each winery once. Single tickets are $95 and couples tickets are $140 (plus tax and service fee) and include:

• 1 wine and food pairing at each winery, per person
• 3 additional wine tastings per winery, per person
• 1 potted herb or vegetable plant per ticket (1 for a single ticket, 1 for a single DD ticket, and 1 for a couples ticket)
• 1 recipe collection per ticket
• 1 souvenir wine glass per person

Discounted designated driver tickets are also available. The DD gets all the same perks as a regular ticket, minus the wine. They also get a DD travel mug, rather than a wine glass. $45 for a single (plus tax and service fee).

Our ever-popular blacksmithing Heritage Maker workshops are back! Join instructor Jonathan Bernard to learn the art of blacksmithing in small-group, hands-on training sessions at Cumming Nature Center.

Classes for all skill levels will be offered in April & May, ranging from the Fundamentals of Blacksmithing to Advanced Knife-Making courses. Each participant will go home with an object they created during the class.

BEGINNER BLACKSMITHING: FIRE POKER | $70

Beginner blacksmithing is a 2-hour class that builds on the fundamentals course, and introduces students to the challenge of working with thicker metals. Students create a fireplace poker with decorative twists and tapered handle. Students are required to have either taken the introduction class or have prior experience blacksmithing. All tools and materials are included with registration.

Students are recommended to bring their own safety glasses and wear a long sleeve shirt and jeans for protection. Other safety gear will be available if needed.

HAMMONDSPORT--The Keuka Dragon Boat Club, located at the Finger Lakes Boating Museum, announces its upcoming “Dragon Boat 101” workshops for the public, free of charge.

The workshops will be an hour long and will teach the “101” basics of boating, paddling techniques, and Dragon Boat operation.

There will be three workshop dates: May 9 at 6pm, May 20 at 3pm, and May 23 at 6pm.

The workshop will be held in the “Dragons Den” at the Finger Lakes Boating Museum.

INN AT TAUGHANNOCK FALLS RELEASES NEW CHEF'S CLUB TASTING SERIES 
The new program debuts this spring and is the first phase of the Chef's Club project 

The Inn at Taughannock Falls is pleased to announce their new Chef's Club Tasting Series at Taughannock Project. The first phase of this project will involve three foodie focused gourmet experiences where guests will be able indulge in multi-course tasting menus dedicated to decadent cuisine themes. The Inn will host "Aux Chocolat" on April 13th, "Di Pasta" on April 27th, and "The Vegan Menu" on May 11th. Each of these nights will focus on the themes of Chocolate, Pasta, and Veganism respectively, utilizing a 6-7 course prix-fixe menu and an optional local wines pairing package. 

The Inn at Taughannock Falls is expanding its restaurant profile, and introducing a revitalization of its dining program and offerings. Executive Chef Clem Coleman joined the restaurant in 2022, helping to spearhead the post-COVID initiative to open the restaurant's doors to bigger, more vibrant experiences. Combining this with the utilization of the new one-acre Enchantment Garden the restaurant hopes to give guests an unrivaled experience. Restaurant and Hotel guests are welcome to make a memory out of their time at the Inn, sitting at one of the many fire pits or the outdoor two-story wood burning fireplace, enjoying the Sonos-sound system which connects each corner of the restaurant and garden, and marveling at the cutting edge LED light system that assists in setting custom moods and tones for each event or occasion.

Of the tasting series, Chef Clem said  "It's such an excellent opportunity to not only showcase the diverse culinary backgrounds of our kitchen staff but also to incorporate elements and themes from the surrounding communities, and especially local farms, into these really immersive menus. We're so excited to highlight these dishes."  The Inn at Taughannock Falls re-opens for the season on March 31st and will be offering regular dinner service Fridays-Sundays from 5-9PM. Easter and Mother's Day brunches will be available 11AM-4PM as well. The restaurant will open for its full Thursday-Monday schedule in June. Direct customer reviews have earned the restaurant the OpenTable Diner's Choice Award for 2023 in the following categories: Foodies, Ambiance, Romance, Notable Wine List, and Special Occasions. The Inn at Taughannock Falls also extends special thanks to local winery operators that are assisting them with expanding their local wine portfolio for the second season in a row.

West End Gallery is excited to announce the opening of its latest exhibit, “A Collection of New Artwork by Brian S. Keeler and Treacy Ziegler.”  The exhibit features new work by two regional artists working in a variety of mediums.  Keeler has done a series of paintings of the Finger Lakes region, featuring Keuka and Seneca Lakes.  Ziegler will be exhibiting landscapes and interiors in oil as well as sculpture work done in bronze, concrete, and paper castings of animals and birds. 

Brian Keeler lives in Ithaca, NY and has a studio in Wyalusing, PA.  Keeler has established himself as one of the preeminent realist painters working in the Northeast today.  His distinctive use of color, fine draftsmanship, attention to proportional harmony and compositional relationships have made his work easily recognizable.  His love of painting landscapes on location in the direct manner of the impressionists and others provides a certain immediacy and authenticity to his paintings.  He then combines the plein air work with more ambitious studio paintings.  The paintings of Brian Keeler have received a host of awards and acclaim during a career that spans over 30 years.  His subjects and sources of inspiration are of the landscapes of Pennsylvania and the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, portraiture, the figure, still life and works from Italy where he teaches painting workshops in Umbria and Tuscany.  His paintings have been collected by many individuals, corporations, and museums and feature articles have appeared in American Artist Magazine and in Pastelogram, a journal for pastel artists.  Two books have been illustrated by Keeler in collaboration with their authors, one a children’s book and the other a treatise on a mystical theme.
 
In his artist’s statement, Keeler says, “The portrayal of light as seen directly on the topography of the Finger Lakes area is the unifying theme of this group of paintings.  Many of them are plein air works, which means that they were composed and painted on location with completions made in the studio.  The paintings of Corot, or more precisely his approach rather than style have often served as an inspiration, as he was the ‘proto impressionist,’ meaning that he was one of the first to take an easel outside to paint.  As I often do the out-of-doors painting late in the day because of my attraction to the heightened drama of raking light, a number of these works show the sun glinting on the lakes or glowing through trees etc.  Others in the show are entirely painted in the studio but certainly based on impressions and studies from the motif.  The play of light as it describes the form and character of the land or figure and brings out various qualities has long been of interest to me, and this show continues with that exploration.”
 
Brian Keeler has released a new book on figure painting titled "Light on the Figure - Aspects of Painting People."  This 172-page hardcover is a beautiful compilation of over four decades of painting people.  It includes chapters on street scenes, genre subjects, allegory, portraits, Italy, and the Nude.  This is not just another beautiful coffee table book as it is content-rich with plenty of explanatory text.  There is a unique feature to the book that may very well be the first of its kind in publishing.  There are links to dozens of the paintings and demos to YouTube tutorials where the artist demonstrates the process.  Nothing quite like it ever.  In short, the book is a unique functionality between text, image, and video!  There are plans to have a digital version available, too.  The book sells for $54.50 and will be available for sale at West End Gallery in a few weeks.
 
In advance praise for the book, John O'Hern, former director of the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira, NY and current Santa Fe Editor of International Artist Publishing, states “Brian Keeler is a man literally of many hats, equally at home and accomplished in painting landscapes, portraits, and the figure as well as in writing and teaching.  I have admired his work for over 30 years.  It’s a pleasure to see so many paintings and to read his thoughts on painting the figure in this enlightening book.”  Keeler was recently featured in the April 2022 issue of American Art Collector Magazine in an article written by John O’Hern.
 
Treacy Ziegler of Newfield, NY

In her artist’s statement, Ziegler says “My intention in creating art is irrelevant.  I like to believe that art exists in a state of ‘without why’ and ‘just because.’  Not in the sense that the art speaks for itself as this suggests that the art has to fit into the conceptual space of language.  And not in the sense of art for art’s sake as this alternatively suggests that art exists outside the unity of living experience.  Art needs no language; it is tacit.  Call it unvoiced; or better, pre-voice.  However, having said that, in developing art, I must begin at some reference point of experience.  I begin with specific space, form, light and shadow in which these elements are evocative and, again, without voice, without a why.  I follow this initial reference point, a place, a room, in a certain mood following an aesthetic path rather than a thinking one.  My guides along the way are color harmony, composition and light and shadow.  The residual narrative is a trace of the original reference point.”

Treacy’s work was featured recently in the April 2023 American Art Collector Magazine in an article which was also written by John O’Hern.

Join us as we dig through the stacks in our wine library and sample some older vintages. Vertical tastings enlighten one’s understanding as to the role vintage conditions, winemaking practices, vineyard sites, and plain fate have in creating each wine’s personality.

This event will be held in our Tasting Room (at Billsboro Winery) on Sunday, May 14^th, from 5-7 pm and will focus on Sauvignon Blanc vintages 2012, 2015, 2016 and Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah vintages 2008, 2011, 2014. As always, we will compare with the current vintage.  Bottles will be available to purchase, with a one bottle limit.

Winemaker/Owner Vinny Aliperti will guide you through each vintage. These are interactive events, and we encourage you to ask questions!

Although light food pairings will be provided to complement the wines, our focus will be these vintage wines and a full meal should not be expected.

She grew up in Webster, New York, received a BA in Studio Art, and lived in Ithaca for a short time before moving downstate. Her paintings have been shown in several galleries and venues across the state, from the Adirondacks to the Hudson Valley, where she lived until 2020 upended the world. She is amazed and grateful to be back in the Finger Lakes.

GCV&M does not host opposing force fire demonstrations or reenactments; instead the Museum’s costumed historic interpreters, tradespeople, and special guests experts and scholars present engaging experiences steeped in the details of history relevant to New York State in the 1860s – and the impacts that continue to reverberate in modern life. See the relationship between President Lincoln and Frederick Douglass play out in real time, examine every detail of the garments Union soldiers wore into battle, smell coffee and bacon cooking over open fires, learn about women who disguised themselves as men to enlist, watch firing demonstrations and musket loading drills, fall in line with either the “Mumford ranks” or the “Caledonia ranks,” and so much more. Women took active roles in the Civil War, both on the home front maintaining households, trades, and tending farms, as well as on the battlefield – sometimes disguising themselves as men to join the fray. During this year’s Civil War Living History Weekend, guests can attend a panel discussion with guests Dr. Audrey Scanlan-Teller and Tracey McIntire focused on women in the Civil War who disguised themselves as men and took up arms to protect the Union. This panel will be moderated by V Spehar, host of Under the Desk News.

No battles were fought in NY state, but the impact of the conflict was great

The inconsistency between America’s founding freedoms and the lived experience of enslaved persons was thrust into the consciousness of many throughout the country. While no battles took place in New York, more than 400,000 New Yorkers fought in the war and the state played a key role in the Abolitionist movement. Throughout the weekend, Museum interpreters, expert guest speakers, and performers will share stories of how the war impacted all residents of New York. Visitors can join Doug Oakes and Terri Olszowy from the Friends of the Elmira Civil War Prison Camp for a fascinating talk about how the Elmira Prison Camp pivoted from a training facility for Union soldiers to holding for captured Confederates.

Explore the relationship between President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass

Special guests President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass (portrayed by Fritz Klein and David Shakes) will be on-site throughout the weekend to greet visitors, pose for “likenesses,” and discuss their historical collaboration to recruit and enlist People of Color. Those interested in learning more about Fritz Klein’s career depicting the 16^th president of the United States and his method for such an uncanny portrayal are encouraged to purchase tickets for “Becoming Lincoln: An Evening with Fritz Klein” at GCV&M on Thursday, May 18. Abolition, advocating for citizenship, and the experience of USTC

Visitors can join guest expert Marvin-Alonzo Greer, Lead Historic Interpretation & Community Engagement Officer for the Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission, for an exploration of Black Americans advocating for citizenship and the USCT (then known as the United States Colored Troops). Guests will also have the opportunity to explore the topic of abolition with Cheyney McKnight of Not Your Momma’s History.

Civil War Living History Homeschool Day (Friday, May 19)

Leading up to our Civil War Living History Weekend, homeschool families are invited to attend a Civil War Living History Homeschool Field Trip Day on Friday, May 19, from 1 – 4 p.m. Explore the impact of the Civil War on our nation and the actions New Yorkers took to engage in the momentous event. Meet Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass, play Civil War-era games, explore abolition movements, learn about wartime communications in the Telegraph and Print Office, attend talks in Civil War fashions in the John L. Wehle Gallery, experience what it was like for soldiers to be recruited and trained, and so much more. HAMMONDSPORT--The Keuka Dragon Boat Club, located at the Finger Lakes Boating Museum, announces its upcoming “Dragon Boat 101” workshops for the public, free of charge.

The workshops will be an hour long and will teach the “101” basics of boating, paddling techniques, and Dragon Boat operation.

There will be three workshop dates: May 9 at 6pm, May 20 at 3pm, and May 23 at 6pm.

The workshop will be held in the “Dragons Den” at the Finger Lakes Boating Museum.

“Once upon a time…” opens the door to tales of impossible things and wondrous adventures; it is an equally apt beginning for this concert, in which we’ll hear such stories explored and depicted through music. Schumann’s Märchenbilder (‘Fairy Tale Pictures’) is a set of charming character pieces, while Shih-Hui Chen’s programmatic work Returning Souls introduces us to the legends of the Amis people of Taiwan. More a saga than fable, Mendelssohn’s second viola quintet is replete with drama, exuberance, and pathos – all the elements of a gripping narrative.

She grew up in Webster, New York, received a BA in Studio Art, and lived in Ithaca for a short time before moving downstate. Her paintings have been shown in several galleries and venues across the state, from the Adirondacks to the Hudson Valley, where she lived until 2020 upended the world. She is amazed and grateful to be back in the Finger Lakes.

Taughannock Falls, near Trumansburg, NY and north of Ithaca along the west shore of Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes region, has long been boasted to be the tallest waterfall east of the Rockies. Or the tallest in the eastern US. Or the tallest straight-drop waterfall in the east. Or even the tallest waterfall in New York State. Yet it is none of these. In this encore episode of Walk in the Park (217), let’s take a look at Taughannock Falls, its geology, and its place among the great waterfalls.

“Once upon a time…” opens the door to tales of impossible things and wondrous adventures; it is an equally apt beginning for this concert, in which we’ll hear such stories explored and depicted through music. Schumann’s Märchenbilder (‘Fairy Tale Pictures’) is a set of charming character pieces, while Shih-Hui Chen’s programmatic work Returning Souls introduces us to the legends of the Amis people of Taiwan. More a saga than fable, Mendelssohn’s second viola quintet is replete with drama, exuberance, and pathos – all the elements of a gripping narrative.
