ANCIENT NATIVE TRADITION OF ADOPTING "IN" IS SUBJECT OF OCTOBER 24 FRIENDS OF GANONDAGAN LECTURE

Oct 09th, 2013
Historical and Contemporary Examples Brought to Light by Speakers Peter Jemison and Sally Roesch Wagner

Victor, NY—Mary Jemison and Matilda Joslyn Gage will be the historical examples used in “Adopting ‘In’: Preserving Iroquois Traditional Community,” the second lecture on Thursday, October 24 in Friends of Ganondagan’s Native American Lecture Series at Nazareth College’s Shults Center.

Speakers G. Peter Jemison (Seneca), eighth generation descendent of Mary Jemison, and Ganondagan site manager; and Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner, executive director of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, will delve into the fascinating variations of adopting “in.” Part of an ancient Native tradition that preceded European arrival, adopting “in” was used historically to “replace” a loved one who was killed or who passed away. Also discussed will be the circumstance of Native Americans born into certain Nations but adopted into different ones.

The 2013 Lecture Series is a collaboration between the Friends of Ganondagan and Nazareth College’s Department of History and the Center for Service-Learning. The third and final lecture on Thursday, November 21, is “Adopting ‘Out’: Researching and Reclaiming Identity.”

Individual lecture prices are $15; $10/Friends of Ganondagan members; $5/students with ID. Tickets will be available at the event beginning at 6:30 pm. Visit www.ganondagan.org/events.html.
