BIOGRAPHY

THE BURNS SISTERS

An American folk music group from Ithaca, New York, The Burns Sisters are known for their tight harmonies. They create a beautiful, unified combination that sounds like one voice with different colors. The group has performed and toured all over the country with their own band, then with Arlo Guthrie, and shared the stage with Tom Paxton, Janis Ian, Ellis Paul, Butch Hancock, & Jimmy LaFave ,The Boston Pops, the Binghamton Philharmonic, and many more. Annie and Marie Burns are heartfelt songwriters that lure you into a song from the beginning to end. They have toured in Ireland the past two years and are planning an extensive Celtic music project.

Growing up in a family with a politically active father and musically inclined mother, it was inevitable that New York's The Burns Sisters would coalesce around making evocative, Americana-tinged music. What is surprising, however, is that the band - originally made up of five of the 12 Burns siblings, but now centered on Annie and Marie Burns - has spent nearly 30 years successfully mining all corners of the Great American Songbook.

The Burns Sisters' latest full-length album, 2012's "The Hills of Ithaca", is based on a Woody Guthrie poem written about the upstate city, around which the Burns family grew up. The album also includes reinterpretations of standards by Big Bill Broonzy, Billie Holiday and Ray Charles, but its biggest hook is the adamant anti-fracking song "Gas Man," which proves that folk music played by Baby Boomers can still be fiercely relevant.
