Casa Larga Kicks Off NY Wine Spotting

Jul 24th, 2013

Fairport, NY - On July 29, Casa Larga Vineyards will host the kick-off event for the new "Buy Local" movement NY Wine Spotting. The event is open to the public to learn how to be an "NY Wine Spotter," try wine and food pairings, hear speakers and win door prizes from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

NY Wine Spotting began with a challenge from Savor Life radio host Michael Warren Thomas of WYSL 1040. Thomas challenged Rochester restaurants to make Finger Lakes and New York State wines at least one-third of their wine list. His challenge has become NY Wine Spotting: a movement that pairs local wineries with local restaurants and the local people who have been looking for local wines on the menus.

At the event, guests will receive a guide to wine spotting and cards and stickers to leave behind in restaurants. During the food and wine pairings, they will learn how our region's cold-climate wines pair well with local foods. Warfield's restaurant, Simply Crêpes and Pizzeria Uno will show how just about any food can pair with local wines, provided by Casa Larga.

Certified Sommeliers Holly Howell and Eric Mueller will also speak to local wine and food pairings during the event. Howell is a wine writer and Mueller is General Manager at the Warfield's restaurants in Victor and Clifton Springs.

"We're very excited that a drink local campaign is finally gaining ground in Rochester," remarks Andrea Colaruotolo-O'Neill, Director of Marketing at Casa Larga. "We need the support of our local restaurants and communities in order for New York to be recognized for the award-winning wines it makes. Casa Larga is thrilled to be part of the movement and we look forward to being spotted in more local restaurants."

About NY Wine Spotting:

NY Wine Spotting is a "Buy Local" movement encouraging Rochester restaurants to support the Finger Lakes wine region by adding more local wines to their menus. Restaurants are challenged to make Finger Lakes and New York State wines at least one-third of their wine list. The local wine-loving public is encouraged to participate by becoming "Wine Spotters" - checking restaurants' wine lists for Finger Lakes wines, recognizing the restaurants that have them and asking restaurants that don't to carry them. The local wine industry in encouraged to participate in much the same way consumers are, along with reaching out to the restaurants to introduce their wines through education and tastings.

NY Wine Spotting is using social media to fuel the movement. NY Wine Spotting is on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - and asks participants to follow them and tag them when they post, using hashtags #flxwinespotting and #flxwinespot to talk about it and identify restaurants with Finger Lakes wines. Consumers can identify their favorite pairings when they check in to a restaurant on Foursquare, and are encouraged to post photos of Finger Lakes wines in their glass or on the menu. Social media participation will be tracked, with the most active engagers earning prizes for participating.
