PBS Travel Show to Feature Southern Finger Lakes

Mar 09th, 2018

WATKINS GLEN, NY – Our small towns are about to get some big love from PBS. Emmy-nominated travel personality Darley Newman and her Emmy-winning crew explored the Southern Finger Lakes region last September to get footage for the new season of Travels With Darley, a PBS travel show, which will begin airing across the country in March 2018. The new season brings the series, which can be seen in over 96% of the USA on PBS stations (approximately 211,000,000 viewers), to 30 half-hour episodes. This will be the show’s first episode featuring a destination in New York State, placing the Southern Finger Lakes alongside such destinations as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Martinique and Great Britain.

Travels with Darley follows TV host Darley Newman in beautiful, awe-inspiring places as she experiences what gives each destination its authentic “sense of place” . . . all with the help of local residents. Each episode introduces millions of U.S. and global viewers to food, nature, art, music, history, attractions and adventure, showcasing what makes each location truly unique. While in the Southern Finger Lakes, Darley and her crew experienced glider rides and Mark Twain, exceptional food and art, waterfalls and race cars, plus wine, paddle-boarding, a museum dedicated to the fastest man on earth, and more, capturing the essence of this Destination of Innovation.

“This was my first visit to the Finger Lakes, and I was surprised by the diversity of activities and truly delighted by the beauty of the area,” said Newman. “We worked to capture the essence of the Southern Finger Lakes through its people. I’m a frequent traveler who has experienced quite a lot of the world and Finger Lakes locals introduced me to a lot of firsts, including my first ride in a glider, trying glassblowing and driving on a racetrack. I’m excited for potential travelers near and far to see these experiences and learn about things they can visit the Finger Lakes to enjoy.”

Viewers familiar with the Southern Finger Lakes may also learn something new watching the two episodes on the area. “Travels with Darley: New York’s Southern Finger Lakes” kicks off the new season and “Travels with Darley: Finger Lakes & Monongahela Forests,” which focuses on activities in and around the Finger Lakes National Forest, will run the fourth week in the lineup.

The episode featuring the Southern Finger Lakes (specifically Elmira, Corning, Watkins Glen and Hammondsport) will kick off the upcoming season of Travels With Darley in March and is set to air on local PBS affiliate WSKG on Sunday, March 18 at 11:30am. While Darley and her crew were in the region, they also filmed a separate half-episode focused on the Finger Lakes National Forest which is slated to run on WSKG on Sunday, April 8th at 11:30am.

WXXI (Rochester area) plans to play the new season of Travels with Darley in marathon form on Sunday, April 29th from 1pm-4pm on WXXI-TV. The two NY-themed episodes will air at 1pm and 2:30pm. Travels with Darley airs on WMHT on Tuesdays/Thursdays at 11pm and Wednesdays at 5am.

If you are outside the WSKG viewing area, be sure to contact your local PBS station to find out when the Southern Finger Lakes episodes will air.
