The George Eastman Museum has announced the fall lineup for its Wish You Were Here photography lecture series. The series will begin on Thursday, September 22 at 6 p.m., with photographer and RIT visiting professor Sean McFarland. His talk, Glass Mountains, Echoes, and Pictures of Us, will be followed by a book signing. McFarland’s work examines history, photography, and the representation of landscape to reveal how our perception of the earth is ever changing. His work is on view through October 2 in the museum’s exhibition Photography and America’s National Parks. The museum’s galleries will be open until 8 p.m.
The Wish You Were Here series continues on November 10 at 6 p.m. with Los Angeles–based photographer Elena Dorfman and her talk The Reconstructed Landscape. In recent years, Dorfman has shifted her lens from portraits of subcultures to contemplative American landscapes. Her labor-intensive composite photographs of rock quarries and the LA River have been likened to the aesthetics of the Hudson River School. A book signing will follow the talk.
The final Wish You Were Here lecture will be held on December 1 at 6 p.m. Armenian-American photographer Diàna Markosian explores the relationship between memory and place through her images, which she will discuss in her talk Documenting the Personal. Her work has taken her to some of the most remote corners of the world, and her images can be found in publications like National Geographic, The New Yorker, and the New York Times. In 2016, Markosian was announced as a Magnum Nominee.
All three Wish You Were Here lectures will be held in the Dryden Theatre, and admission is free for museum members and students (with valid ID). For nonmembers, the September 22 talk is included with museum admission ($14 general, $12 seniors), and the November 10 and December 1 talks are $6 general and seniors. Galleries are open until 8 p.m. for the September 22 talk only. Doors open 45 minutes before the lecture begins, and the museum’s café will be open for dinner, coffee, or dessert.
