Popular Finger Lakes Winery's Dogs Write a Book and Throw a Party

May 08th, 2013

Proceeds from the day's worth of pet-friendly, kid-friendly
events to benefit local shelters

(Interlaken, NY) Americana Vineyards Winery is so very proud to announce that their dogs and official winery greeters, Max and Rubie, have completed their first book, "My Americana Family." And to celebrate, the pair is throwing a book release and signing party to benefit local shelters and rescues on June 1, from 12:00pm to 8:00pm at the winery. Kids, pets and parents are all invited and asked to bring donations of pet food and supplies to support four local shelters and rescues: Cayuga Dog RescuePet the Pet ProgramSeneca County SPCA and Browncoat Cat Rescue

The dogs, who are regular bloggers for the winery and twitter commentators on what goes on there, have put their experiences and relationships into a kids book, which will be released June 1 at the party. They will even be on hand to "sign" copies all day, with a portion of the sales (the book retails for $7.99) also going to the rescues and shelters.

"We wanted to give the dogs their day, as it were," said the pooches' dad, Joseph Gober, Jr., owner of Americana. "And the idea just sort of took on a life of its own from there!"

Americana has always been a pet-friendly winery, and a strong animal rights advocate. The winery team decided to bring it all together with a party. The day-long benefit will consist of a kid-friendly and pet-friendly "Carnival" from 12:00pm to 6:00pm and an adult Wine & Cheese Reception with Silent Auction from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

From 12:00pm to 6:00pm, the four shelters will be on hand to accept donations, discuss pet adoption and allow everyone to cuddle with their "pet adoption ambassadors." In exchange for donations, (people) attendees will receive Doggone Fun Ticket for every dollar in donations they bring. The tickets can be used for activities like face painting, wine tastings, a pick-a-prize raffle and more.

"Don't worry if you forget your donations though," said Patty Stark, co-chair of the benefit, and long time winery employee. "You can still buy tickets for a dollar each. And all the donations -- goods, food and money -- will be split up among the shelters and rescues at the end of the day."

In addition, there will be several pet vendors on hand, including The Collar Lab from Rochester and the Sassy Dog Groomers Salon from Jacksonville.

For the kids, there will be live book readings, kids movies with popcorn, crafts, a real fire truck for them to explore, and plenty of kid friendly foods.

For the dogs, there will be grooming, homemade dog biscuits created by the winery's Crystal Lake Café's Chef Jen Ungberg, a photo booth where they can have their pictures taken for custom wine labels when their "moms and dads" buy a bottle of Americana wine, and  plenty of room to run and romp.

For the adults, there will be local food vendors, wine slushies, neighboring wineries and distilleries sampling and selling, pet adoption and pet care information in addition to the evening's Wine & Cheese Reception.

For kids, dogs and adults alike, there will be a full day of live music, generously donated by area musicians for the cause. The band line-up for the day is:

12:00 Immortal Jellyfish

1:00 Gary & Leeann

2:00 Tru Bleu

3:00 Cool Club of Hector

4:00 The Tarps

5:00 The Purple Valley

6:00-8:00 Dave Raducha

A full schedule of festivities and updates is available at Book Release Party TAB on Americana Vineyards Winery's Facebook page

"We consider ourselves very lucky to have such a great home here at Americana. But we know that there are lots of dogs that don't have any home at all," woofs Max, the elder spokes pup of the dynamic canine duo. "We are so glad we're able to do something to help our brothers and sisters out who aren't as lucky. Maybe this will help them get a chance at a great life too!"

About Americana Vineyards Winery and Crystal Lake Café:

Americana Vineyards Winery is a destination winery located 15 minutes north of Ithaca, New York right off Cayuga Lake in the center of New York’s Finger Lakes Wine Region at 4367 East Covert Road in Interlaken. Americana opened in 1981, and is a founding member and anchor winery for the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. The Winery added an additional facility in 1999 for private parties, and Crystal Lake Café in 2006, a from-scratch café for year-round dining -- including their popular Sunday Brunch.
