Exhibitions
René Lalique: Enchanted by Glass
May 17, 2014-Jan 4, 2015

René Lalique was a master artist and designer whose objects incorporated a variety of materials.  But the medium he preferred was glass.  He studied the properties of glass in order to achieve his artistic vision, and used a variety of glassmaking techniques to make his works. This major exhibition brings together more than 200 glass objects, design drawings, and jewelry, drawn primarily from the collection of The Corning Museum of Glass, with loans from select international museums. It documents Lalique’s fascination with glass, first as a jeweler and then as an industrialist. Free with admission.

Designing for a New Century: Works on Paper by Lalique and his Contemporaries
May 17, 2014-Jan 4, 2015

At the turn of the 20th century, René Lalique’s jewelry and his glass sculptures and vessels made an impact on the development of Art nouveau and Art Deco decorative arts. This exhibition surveys the extraordinary designs created by Lalique and his European contemporaries, including Maurice Marinot, Auguste Herbst, Emile Gallé, and Val St. Lambert, through original drawings, trade catalogs, period photographs, and rare books from the special collections of the Rakow Research Library of The Corning Museum of Glass. Free with admission.

Junior Curators’ Exhibition
June 12, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Junior Curators are local teens who learn the inner workings of a museum and then use what they’ve learned to curate an exhibition. They study both glass and how a museum functions. The also tour the Museum, The Studio, and the Rakow Research Library and even make their own glass flowers and beads. In creating their exhibition the Junior Curators have been asked to consider the questions: What objects appeal to me and why? How was each object made? What relationships exist between the objects? How can we help our audience engage with the objects? The final exhibit will be on display beginning in June and will be seen by visitors from around the world.
