Finger Lakes Events Calendar

Festivals, Happy Hour, Live Music, Theatre, and More!

It doesn’t matter what your interests are or who you’re in the Finger Lakes with, you can always find a great event to enrich your time in the region with those you care about.

Events take place all year round in the Finger Lakes region. From lakeside (and on the lake) events in the summer to harvest activities in the fall, snowmobiling or snowshoeing in the winter, and festivals in the springtime! Step inside a glassmaker’s studio to blow your own glass, stroll Main Street on a food tour, or gather for live music and theater performances. Browse the list of Finger Lakes events below or search the specific dates you will be visiting to see everything going on in the region.

Great Events that Happen Every Year

Below, you will find dozens of great events happening throughout the year with many of them happening annually. If you have memories of favorite annual Finger Lakes events from childhood such as cardboard boat regattas, hot air balloon festivals, cheese, apple or pumpkin festivals, to name a few, it’s likely that event that still takes place or, has likely improved your enjoyment. If you see a special event that piques your interest but can’t make it, click on the event anyway, it might be coming back next year!

Events Added Daily

Make sure to check back frequently to see if any other great events have been added. Events are added daily by businesses from every sector and interest so if there is nothing that sparks your interest now, there very well could be soon!

Redbud and dogwood bloom at Robert H. Treman State Park in Ithaca NY.
Paying it Forward in Parks

2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the New York State Park system, and we are celebrating it locally! Robert H. Treman State Park itself was opened to the public a century ago, and Buttermilk Falls State Park was established in 1924 as well.

The Friends of Robert H. Treman State Park (Tremanparkfriends.org) have worked with Finger Lakes State Parks education/interpretation staff to produce exhibits about state parks in Tompkins County and the Finger Lakes Region in the atrium of the Tompkins Center for History and Culture (tompkins-center.net) on the Ithaca Commons. Come on down and explore the displays and short videos, including a life-sized image of Robert H. Treman, benefactor and leader in the creation of our state parks in Tompkins County and throughout the region, as well as other local parks and preserves. We take a brief tour of the exhibits in this episode (#260) of Walk in the Park (Walkinthepark.tv)

Also on May 4, hundreds of volunteers across the state pitched in on “I Love My Park Day” to help prepare parks for this season and for generations to come. We go to Robert H. Treman State Park to see what was happening there, including interviews with Park Supervisor Cassie Lovelace, Park Manager Jim Brophy, and Finger Lakes State Park Regional Director Fred Bonn. I Love My Park Day is coordinated by Parks & Trails NY (ptny.org).

Walk in the Park is a non-commercial, public access, cable TV series shown on channel 13 in the Ithaca, NY area. Owl Gorge Productions (Owlgorge.com) produces Walk in the Park as a public service at PEGASYS Community Media Center (Pegasys.webstarts.com). Owl Gorge Productions is a Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance partner.

Brentano String Quartet
Brentano String Quartet

Geneva Music Festival 2024 Season: Light and Dark
Thursday, May 30, 7:30 PM
Brentano String Quartet

Mark Steinberg and Serena Canin, violins;
Misha Amory, viola;
Nina Lee, cello

Haydn String Quartet Op. 33 No. 5
Shostakovich String Quartet No. 8
Mendelssohn String Quartet in D Major, Op. 44/1

Join the Brentano Quartet, hailed by the New York Times for their “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism” for a special concert celebrating musical contrasts. Revel in Joseph Haydn’s genial and energetic String Quartet in G Major, Op. 33, No. 5, which overwhelmingly brings warmth and light to mind. Darkness descends in the String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich; its dedication (“In memory of the victims of fascism and war”), somber, sometimes grating harmonies, and musical allusions (incorporating, for instance, “Dies irae” from the Catholic requiem mass) capture the pain and sorrow felt by its composer. Hope dawns, though, and brightness reigns in Felix Mendelssohn’s spirited String Quartet in D major, Op. 44, No. 1.

All programs subject to change.

Saturday, June 1, 7:30PM

Geoffrey Herd and Blake Pouliot, violin;
Eric Wong, viola;
Clive Greensmith and Max Geissler, cello;
Esther Park, piano

Beethoven Op. 76, “Harp”
Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2
Georges Antoines Piano Quartet

Music making can be a balm, offering respite among sorrow and strife, and giving artists a way of expressing their pain or reacting to their circumstances. In music, composers may celebrate victories, lament the loss of friends, or find the metaphorical harmony and peace that eludes the larger world. Join resident GMF artists for an exploration of three composers whose lives and works were shaped by their experience of conflict. Written during the Napoleonic wars, Beethoven’s “Harp” Quartet is a sparkling, lyrical reminder of joy, while Shostakovich’s Piano Trio, written as a memorial and replete with a danse macabre, dwells upon the tragic. Georges Antoine’s Piano Quartet, emerging from the trenches of World War I, is a passionate testament to a musical career cut short.

Wag Your Tail Along The Trail

Dearest four-legged friends,

The moment has come for you to nudge your human companion and make your way to the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, from June 1st through the 30th. Each winery along the trail has prepared delightful treats just for you, the most delightful of all creatures, and ample pets and belly rubs await from admirers aplenty to make your tail wag with joyous vigor.

"But what about my beloved human?" you might inquire. Fear not, for they too shall partake in the festivities. At the very first winery you visit within the designated dates, your human will receive a 'pooch-friendly punch card'. Should they manage to guide you to 6 or more wineries, acquire a bottle at each, and turn in their punch card at the final stop (or mail it to the wine trail office), they will enter for a chance to claim a grand prize! The precise nature of the reward remains a closely guarded secret, but we shall reveal it in due course.

Take note, dear reader, of these important considerations for your human's awareness:

  • The tasting rooms of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail's esteemed wineries are entirely pet-friendly, though restaurant areas are an exception.
  • Participation in this splendid event is free, save for any tasting fees your human may incur at each winery.
  • The first 100 who pre-register will receive a free bandana to enhance your undeniable charm. (see below to pre-register)
  • While we trust you'll be the epitome of good manners, please stay leashed at all times. We wouldn't want you to dart off with unchecked enthusiasm and lose your way.
  • Additionally, the wine trail has been busily planning further delights, including souvenir options to mark your visit, delectable dog biscuits to take home, photo opportunities, contests, and much more!

Yours devotedly,

Mark Olivieri, Commission
Alexander Scriabin Sonata-Fantasy No. 2
Kaija Saariaho, Light and Matter
Schönberg: "Verklärte Nacht"

Join GMF resident artists for music that moves from morning to night. We begin with a musical evocation of daybreak; Joseph Haydn’s Quartet in B Flat Op. 76, No. 4 (“Sunrise,”) opens with a gentle melody rising out of a surrounding harmonic halo, before revealing its full brilliance. The Piano Sonata No. 2 in G-sharp minor by Alexander Scriabin moves through both moods and modes to juxtapose light and dark, while contemporary composers offer their own interpretations of such contrasts. We close, of course, as darkness falls with Arnold Schoenberg’s evocative Verklärte Nacht (“Transfigured Night”), which captures the moonlit scene depicted by Richard Dehmal’s eponymous poem.

World Ocean Day at Museum of the Earth
World Ocean Day at Museum of the Earth

Visit the Museum of the Earth on World Ocean Day 2024!

World Ocean Day catalyzes collective action for a healthy ocean and a stable climate. It supports collaborative conservation, working with its global network of youth leaders and 2,000+ organizations in 150+ countries. World Ocean Day has been recognized since 2008 by the United Nations.

Research and outreach at the Paleontological Research Institution has always been deeply connected to oceans and their biodiversity. It started with PRI's extensive research collections of marine fossils. It now includes programs and exhibits at the Museum of the Earth highlighting the geological history of oceans and ocean life, its right whale skeleton, and its tanks of living corals from the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific seas.

Activities and tours will take place on World Ocean Day on Saturday, June 8, from 11 am to 1 pm. They will include:

  • a demonstration of how ocean gyres work;
  • explanation of the Museum coral tanks;
  • examples of fascinating past and present mollusks (clams, snails, and cephalopods);
  • an activity to look for and identify shark teeth;
  • hands-on fossils from the ancient sea that covered New York State in the Devonian period

Schedule:

  • All activities above will be from 11am-1pm
  • 11am - tour of the NY Rocks! exhibit
  • 12pm - a history of ocean life tour, through the Museum of the Earth exhibit

Activities are available to all and included in Museum admission. PRI Members are free!

Runners in the cathedral pines
Frost Town Trail Fest

Explore some of the best terrain that the Bristol Hills has to offer this summer at Frost Town Trail Fest presented by Ironwood Adventure Works. Choose between 10k and 25k race options that will take you up ridges, through the woods, and across every inch of the nature center landscape (plus some bonus neighboring lands as well!).

Proceeds from the race will benefit the Cumming Nature Center’s environmental and educational programming.

25k Trail Run | 9am
The challenging 25k course is a single loop that circumnavigates both the Cumming Nature Center and an adjacent property managed by The Nature Conservancy. A steep winding ascent and then descent through historic logging roads initiate 25k runners to this stout cross terrain trail challenge. Next, after traversing through the well-tended Cumming Nature Center Trail system, runners take the trail less traveled across the rugged Rattlesnake Hill ridgeline east of Lake Honeoye. Aid stations will be available at approximately 4 mile intervals for a total of three support stations on the course.

10k Trail Run | 10am
For a quicker and less remote challenge, the 10k course covers the best of the Cumming Nature Center trail system. Less elevation gain and a more runnable course make this a great first 10k or a fast trail loop for seasoned trail runners. Guaranteed to be beautiful, rain or shine!

Juneteenth Celebration at Booker T. Washington Center

Join Booker T. Washington Community Center for a Juneteenth Celebration to commemorate Black and African American freedom and achievements on June 17, 2023.

Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States. The celebration began on June 19, 1865, which became known as Juneteenth, when Major General Gordon Granger of the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas to deliver the final execution of the Emancipation Proclamation.

For all of us here in Auburn, NY, Juneteenth goes just a little deeper. As the chosen home of Harriet Tubman, the spirit of Juneteenth is alive. It not only commemorates the emancipation of African Americans in the United States, but also celebrates their achievements in history and the fight for a stronger, brighter and fairer future. While in Auburn keep Harriet Tubman’s strength and spirit in mind as you visit the many sites that commemorate her life and fight for freedom. Make sure and stop by her gravesite at Fort Hill Cemetery to leave a little memento in her honor.

“RIDE THE CYCLONE: THE MUSICAL”
June 20–29, 2024
Music, Book, and Lyrics by Brooke Maxwell and Jacob Richmond

In this hilarious and outlandish musical, the lives of six teenagers from a Canadian chamber choir are cut short in a freak accident aboard a roller coaster.  When they awake in limbo, a mechanical fortune teller invites each to tell a story to win a prize like no other: the chance to return to life.  Moving and memorable, “Ride the Cyclone” will remind you to seize each and every day of a thrilling, unexpected, wacky, and joyful existence.

“High-spirited and just plain fun from start to finish.”

The Canine Connoisseur and Wine Trail Leader
