Museum filled with flowers
Dutch Connection

Thousands of blooms fill George Eastman’s Conservatory and Palm House with the sights and scents of spring in this annual display. When George Eastman traveled through the Netherlands on a bicycle trip in 1895, he was amazed at the “blaze of color” he saw as he cycled by the fields of flowers. He wrote to his mother that he wanted to have the same effect in his garden at home in Rochester. During Eastman’s residency in the 900 East Avenue mansion between 1905 and 1932, he ordered tens of thousands of bulbs from Holland every year (except 1918, when a wartime coal shortage forced him to close his greenhouses). He usually ordered in large quantities—mostly tulips, narcissus, and hyacinths for indoor forcing, as well as tulips for the outdoor beds. He sometimes ordered amaryllis, azaleas, and begonias. He preferred various shades of orange, red, pink, lavender, yellow, and white—generally grouped monochromatically when he displayed them. A hundred years after Eastman’s bicycling trip, the Eastman Museum started the annual floral show Dutch Connection to pay homage to Eastman’s practice of buying and planting thousands of bulbs.

The present-day display is based on Eastman’s original orders placed with Dutch bulb-importing companies. The cultivation process began last July, with 14,000 bulbs growing since late September. Volunteers and staff potted the tulips, daffodils, and hyacinth, and the pots were then placed in a root cellar in Highland Park, graciously provided by the Monroe County Parks Department. Lucas Greenhouses in Fairport generously provided space to store thousands of the potted bulbs leading up to the display. Finally, the potted bulbs are brought to the museum, where they are thoughtfully arranged in a spectacular display throughout the Conservatory, Colonnade, and Palm House. Tropical orchids courtesy of the Genesee Region Orchid Society are also displayed throughout the mansion.

Dutch Connection is generously supported by Gerald and Karen Sue Kral and by St. John’s. Root cellar space is provided by the Monroe County Parks Department, and greenhouse space is provided by Lucas Greenhouses, Fairport.

"History Sandwiched In: The History of Jigsaw Puzzles" with the Geneva Historical Society

Geneva, N.Y.: "History Sandwiched In" is a new program series at the Geneva Historical Society featuring short presentations conducted on the first Wednesday of the month. They will be held during the workday lunch hour in spring and fall of 2020. The second program in the series will be "The History of Jigsaw Puzzles" on March 4, 2020 at 12:30 p.m.

People have been enjoying the challenge of piecing together a jigsaw puzzle for over 250 years. From “dissected maps” in the 18th century, to their peak popularity during the Great Depression, to modern 3D puzzles today, this pastime has a rich history that reflects cultural and technological change. Amy Pepe, the Historical Society's Visitor Services and Public Programs Manager, will discuss the evolution of jigsaw puzzles and how the function and popularity of this hobby has changed in the past three centuries.

The program runs approximately one hour in the Hucker Gallery at the Geneva History Museum. Participants are welcome to bring a bag lunch to eat during the program. There are no fees for this presentation. History Sandwiched In will continue on April 1 with "Two Truths and a Lie" by Archivist Becky Chapin.

Theirs is one of the most distinctive and recognizable sounds in the music industry. The four-part harmonies and upbeat songs of The Oak Ridge Boys have spawned dozens of Country hits and a Number One Pop smash, earned them Grammy, Dove, CMA, and ACM awards and garnered a host of other industry and fan accolades. Every time they step before an audience, the Oaks bring four decades of charted singles, and 50 years of tradition, to a stage show widely acknowledged as among the most exciting anywhere. And each remains as enthusiastic about the process as they have ever been.

“When I go on stage, I get the same feeling I had the first time I sang with The Oak Ridge Boys,” says lead singer Duane Allen. “This is the only job I’ve ever wanted to have.”

“Like everyone else in the group,” adds bass singer extraordinaire, Richard Sterban, “I was a fan of the Oaks before I became a member. I’m still a fan of the group today. Being in The Oak Ridge Boys is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.”

The two, along with tenor Joe Bonsall and baritone William Lee Golden, comprise one of Country’s truly legendary acts. Their string of hits includes the Country-Pop chart-topper Elvira, as well as Bobbie SueDream OnThank God For KidsAmerican MadeI Guess It Never Hurts To Hurt SometimesFancy FreeGonna Take A Lot Of River and many others. In 2009, they covered a White Stripes song, receiving accolades from Rock reviewers. In 2011, they rerecorded a thirtieth anniversary version of Elvira for a Cracker Barrel Old Country Store project.

The group has scored 12 gold, three platinum, and one double platinum album—plus one double platinum single—and had more than a dozen national Number One singles and over 30 Top Ten hits.

Riverdance, as you’ve never seen it before!

A powerful and stirring reinvention of this beloved favourite, celebrated the world over for its Grammy award-winning score and the thrilling energy and passion of its Irish and international dance.

Twenty-five years on, composer Bill Whelan has rerecorded his mesmerising soundtrack while producer Moya Doherty and director John McColgan have completely reimagined the ground-breaking show with innovative and spectacular lighting, projection, stage and costume designs.

Immerse yourself in the extraordinary power and grace of its music and dance – beloved by fans of all ages. Fall in love with the magic of Riverdance all over again.

For over 25 years, nothing has carried the energy, the sensuality and the spectacle of Riverdance.

Riverdance began its journey as the interval act in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, produced for television by Moya Doherty. This electrifying and innovative seven minute dance piece was then developed into a full-length stage show by Producer Moya Doherty, Composer Bill Whelan and Director John McColgan. With its fusion of Irish and International music and dance, the show broke all box office records during its world première run in Dublin in early 1995. When the show transferred to London the reaction was unprecedented. There followed a hugely successful tour starting in New York in March 1996, where 8 sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall heralded the start of two decades of touring by Riverdance companies throughout North America. Since its inception Riverdance has packed theatres throughout North America, Oceania, Asia, Europe, South Africa and South America.

Show Length: 2 hours and 10 minutes including a 15 minute intermission.
